Morne Morkel Joins Pakistan Men’s Team As Bowling Coach On a Six-Month Contract; Former Pacer Set To Travel Sri Lanka With The Team

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed former South African pacer Morne Morkel as the bowling coach of the men’s national cricket team on Friday. Morne Morkel is set to join the Pakistan cricket team’s coaching staff during the two-match away series against Sri Lanka next month.

Morne Morkel will join the Pakistan national cricket team on a six-month contract. The former pacer is expected to travel to Sri Lanka with the Pakistan team for the series, which will be played in July. Earlier, he missed being part of the team for the New Zealand series due to IPL commitments.

The PCB made an official announcement on Morne Morkel’s appointment on Friday. The board released the 16-member squad for the upcoming Test series, which is their first assignment in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle.

Grant Bradburn will serve as head coach for the series, while Andrew Puttick and Morkel will serve as batting and bowling coaches, respectively. Pakistan Cricket Team Director Mickey Arthur is not included in the coaching staff list for the tour.

Morne Morkel, a right-arm fast bowler and lower-order left-handed batsman, played for the South African cricket team in 318 international matches across three formats between 2006 and 2018. The right-arm pacer picked up 309 wickets in Tests, 188 ODI wickets, and 47 T20I wickets.

Morne Morkel served as bowling coach of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. The Lucknow-based franchise reached the playoffs for the second consecutive year before being knocked out of the tournament with a loss in ‘Eliminator’.
