MS Dhoni brutally blasted as Pakistan legend drags 2019 World Cup disaster into IPL 2025

Former Pakistan skipper Rashid Latif has launched a brutal attack on MS Dhoni amid Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) struggles in the IPL 2025 season. The former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter said that the legendary cricketer should have retired from cricket some time ago, adding that he is damaging his legacy.
MS Dhoni has been under criticism after failing to make an impact with the bat in three consecutive games during IPL 2025. While his wicketkeeping remains sharp and agile, questions are being raised about his role in the batting lineup. He has scored 76 runs at a strike rate of just 138.18 so far this season.
MS Dhoni Should Have Retired Long Ago - Rashid Latif
In a conversation with IANS, Rashid Latif questioned MS Dhoni over prolonging his career in the IPL. Latif warned that staying past one’s prime can affect a player’s legacy, as younger fans value current performances more than past achievements.
"He should have left a long while back, a wicket-keeper's age is usually 35, I am an example of this. If I was on TV then I am a performer and when I don’t do it at a high level then my reputation will come down. Even if you have done it for 15 years, the younger generations will not be impressed," Latif told IANS.
His Playing Did Not Benefit His Team in the 2019 World Cup - Rashid Latif
The cricketer-turned-expert said that Chennai Super Kings backing MS Dhoni is unfair to the spirit of the game. Latif said that it's time to prioritize what's best for the team. He pointed out that Dhoni's performance didn’t help India during the 2019 World Cup.
"His playing did not benefit his team in 2019 (ODI World Cup) as well, they should have understood then," Laitf added.
"If you are choosing the team over one player then it is unfair to the game which is why they are getting trolled. I saw 2-3 games and the crowd gets very loud but CSK need points right now, they are at the bottom of the table and if the reason is only one or two players then you should realise the need of the hour."
MS Dhoni Retired from International Cricket in 2020
MS Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020 after his final appearance in the 2019 ODI World Cup. However, he has continued his IPL journey with Chennai Super Kings. His recent performances have drawn criticism. The 43-year-old faced backlash for entering at No. 9 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
After undergoing knee surgery following the 2023 season, Dhoni has batted only in the final overs of games during the 2024 and 2025 campaigns. While his presence behind the stumps remains sharp, his diminishing impact with the bat and between the wickets has raised concerns about his overall contribution.
Chennai Super Kings began their IPL 2025 campaign with a win over Mumbai Indians but have suffered three straight defeats. They’ll be aiming to bounce back when they face Punjab Kings on Tuesday, April 8.
