Former batsman Robin Uthappa has stated MS Dhoni is not the problem at Chennai Super Kings after the five-time champions lost against Punjab Kings on Tuesday (April 8).
The defeat was CSK's fourth in five games this season. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side began its campaign on a fine not, beating arch-rivals Mumbai Indians comfortably at home. However, things have gone only downhill since then.
In their second game, they suffered a loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. It was their first home defeat against RCB since 2008. CSK then suffered losses against Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals as well before going down against Punjab Kings.
Bowling first, the Chennai-based outfit had reduced Punjab Kings to 83/5. However, a sensational century from Priyansh Arya and Shashank Singh powered them to 219/6. In reply, CSK finished their innings on 201/5.
With things not going well for CSK, MS Dhoni has been under immense pressure. With the former CSK skipper batting as low as No. 8 or No. 9 this season, many have questioned his place in the team. There have also been calls to drop the five-time IPL-winning captain from the playing eleven.
Robin Uthappa defends MS Dhoni:
After being criticized for his batting position, MS Dhoni came out to bat at number five against Punjab Kings. Although he could not take his team over the line, he did show that he still has a lot to offer with the bat. He scored 27 runs off just 12 balls with the help of four and three sixes.
Following Dhoni's cameo, Robin Uthappa explained the reason behind his former teammate's lower batting positions. He stated that Dhoni has passed on the responsibility to the other individuals to help the transition of the team.
"I don't think there was ever a lack of intent from MS Dhoni. Even outside the IPL, I believe he has passed on responsibility to others and given them a clear understanding of what to expect in the coming years as CSK rebuilds into a championship-contending side.
"That transition is happening, and while we would love to see MS bat the way he is right now, perhaps a little higher up the order, I don't think the problem lies at the end," Robin Uthappa said on the broadcast.
With four defeats from five games, CSK are currently languishing at the ninth spot in the points table. They need to turn things around immediately or risk missing out on the playoffs spot once again. CSK's next game is scheduled to take place against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 11.
