MS Dhoni and the Chennai Super Kings management have reportedly reached a deadlock over an ownership stake. Dhoni expressed interest in buying a share of the franchise, but talks stalled after the management rejected his terms, which has put strain on their long-standing relationship.
Dhoni missed the entire IPL 2026 season due to a calf strain, for the first time in 19 years. He has scored 5,439 IPL runs at an average of 38.3 and a strike rate of 137.46, including 24 half-centuries. The wicketkeeper batter remains one of the most influential players for the franchise.
CSK Management Rejects MS Dhoni’s Ownership Proposal
According to CricBlogger, MS Dhoni expressed interest in buying a stake in Chennai Super Kings, but the two sides could not agree on the terms. Most of the discussions took place verbally, with no formal written proposal or agreement exchanged during the negotiations.
Dhoni initially wanted a 25% stake, while the CSK promoters were willing to offer only 3%. The former India captain then reduced his demand to 20%, but the franchise increased its offer only to 4%.
During further rounds of talks, Dhoni offered to settle for an 18% stake. However, CSK reportedly made a final offer of 5.5%, leaving a significant gap between the two sides.
“Dhoni wanted to buy a stake. He wasn’t asking for it for free, but the CSK management thought otherwise,” a source told CricBlogger.
Failed Stake Talks Raise Questions Over MS Dhoni’s CSK Future
The failed negotiations have added uncertainty to MS Dhoni’s future with CSK. The former India captain has been associated with the franchise since the inaugural IPL season in 2008 and has led the team to 5 IPL titles.
Dhoni’s relationship with the franchise had already become strained because he was not consulted on player-related decisions in recent years. The failed ownership talks have now added another point of tension between the two sides.
It remains unclear whether the stake negotiations played any role in Dhoni’s absence from the 2026 IPL. He missed the entire season due to a calf strain. Head coach Stephen Fleming recently ended his 18-year association with the franchise.
“Whether the two sides can bridge the gap remains to be seen, but the trust that once bound them together appears to have taken a serious hit,” a source said.

MS Dhoni remains one of the most successful players in IPL history. Since making his debut in 2008, he has played 278 matches and scored 5,439 runs at an average of 38.30 and a strike rate of 137.45, including 24 half-centuries.
Dhoni has led Chennai Super Kings to 5 IPL titles and remains their most iconic player. His best IPL season came in 2013, when he scored 461 runs, while his highest individual score remains 84*. He also produced a remarkable 2024 season, striking at 220.54 in his 11 innings.
However, his playing future remains uncertain after he missed the entire 2026 season because of injury. Before that, he played 14 matches in 2025 and scored 196 runs. The veteran has not confirmed whether he will return for another IPL season.
