MS Dhoni, the only captain in cricket history to win all three ICC trophies, may never take charge as the head coach of the Indian National Cricket Team, and the reason has nothing to do with his cricketing brain.
MS Dhoni, who is known for his unmatched composure and charismatic leadership, is the ideal option to guide the India National Cricket Team in the future.
But this possibility might remain a dream for the fans, as the former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan feels his lifestyle won’t allow the legendary wicketkeeper-batter to take up that role if he gets the opportunity shortly.
Atul Wassan shares why MS Dhoni may never coach India National Cricket Team
Wassan has pointed out that coaching the Indian cricket team isn’t just about tactical know-how, but it also demands full-time commitment, non-stop international travel, and months away from home.
He added that for someone like Dhoni, who now enjoys a low-profile life and makes selective appearances, it would be a great deal to return to his playing days’ life.
However, the former Indian pacer believes that Dhoni, who recently led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2025 where they finished at the bottom of the points table, is better suited as a mentor than a full-time coach, which involves constant travel and being on the road with the team.
Atul Wassan on the Bails and Banter show on OTTPlay: “I think he is fit for a mentor, but for coaching, Dhoni does not have patience. Because you know if he becomes a coach, then his lifestyle will keep looping the same way, like touring with the team and all that. Why would he want all that?”

Coaching is like for Gautam Gambhir, not MS Dhoni: Atul Wassan
The commentator feels coaching suits those who like control, like Gautam Gambhir, who is currently serving as the head coach of the Indian cricket team.
He explained that mentoring is more relaxed and personal, like sharing a meal and giving advice when asked, and that’s the best role for Dhoni.
Wassan further explained, “No, coaching is for people who are control-fixed, like Gautam Gambhir, because he needs importance, but mentoring is like 'come, have a seat, let's eat together,' and some players actually approach you. So, you don't have to be the mentor, but there is mentoring going on around the whole universe of cricket. People who are close to you will approach you and take advice, whether you are a mentor or not.”
MS Dhoni back in Ranchi after IPL 2025
Notably, MS Dhoni, who led CSK to five IPL titles, was India’s mentor during the 2021 T20 World Cup. He led India to the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.
After Chennai Super Kings’ poor finish in the IPL 2025 season, Dhoni is back in Ranchi, enjoying bike rides as promised.
As Dhoni takes four months to decide his future, fans are hoping he’ll return next year and lead Chennai Super Kings to their sixth IPL title.
