The Big Bash is seemingly all set to host the opening game of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season in India. Discussions have been going on for months now, which is finally taking a proper shape, which will definitely make Cricket Australia (CA) happy, as they will get the opportunity to explore the Indian market through their franchise league.
CA has been engaged with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a significant amount of time. At first, it looked far from reality.
Cricket Australia is trying to host the BBL opener in India
But now, as per the latest report published by the Indian Express, CA could now dream of hosting the BBL opener in India. The upcoming season of the Big Bash League is scheduled to start from the second week of December 2026.
“We are not able to confirm anything. We are exploring the potential of Chennai in partnership with the Australian Government to deepen the India-Australia relationship. Nothing confirmed as yet, and we are working closely with our friends in BCCI,” a CA representative said about the development.

According to the media report, to take the discussion a step further, a delegation team on behalf of Cricket Australia reached Chennai during the Chennai Super Kings’ final home match in the ongoing Indian Premier League season. BCCI president Mithun Manhas was also in Chennai to meet the CA delegation.
“The BCCI was initially not receptive, but after further discussions, CA is understood to have received positive news from their Indian counterparts. A five-member CA delegation has since flown to Chennai for CSK’s final IPL home game to recce the stadium… BCCI president Mithun Manhas was also in Chennai to meet the CA delegation,” according to the report.
Chennai is likely to host the BBL opener
According to the reports, to host the opener of a BBL season, Chennai emerges as the first choice of the Australian cricket governing board. To translate the plans onto the ground from the planning on paper, the officials of CA are reportedly in touch with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, along with the BCCI.
It is further informed that the timing of the upcoming BBL season has made the situation more challenging. The upcoming season of the Big Bash League will be in December, when there will be monsoon in Chennai.
When will the match be held?
Initially, there were possibilities to see more than one BBL match in India. But, under the current scenarion, only one match can be hosted. The defending champion Perth Scorchers could feature in the match. However, nothing is finalized yet; the matter is under discussion between the top officials of the cricket governing boards.
"While early discussions had floated the possibility of hosting more than one match, scheduling constraints mean it is likely to be just the opener, which could feature defending champions Perth Scorchers. The December timing carries complications. Chennai’s peak monsoon season runs through that month, a factor both boards will need to navigate," the report further indicates.
