Legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni is expected to play in the IPL for at least one more season following N. Srinivasan’s return as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) chairman. The five-time IPL champions reinstated the former BCCI president in a key leadership role after their disappointing 2025 season.
After staying away from cricket administration, the 80-year-old returned to lead Chennai Super Kings following a difficult IPL 2025 season. CSK finished at the bottom of the table for the first time, winning only four of 14 matches. Notably, Ruturaj Gaikwad was replaced by MS Dhoni mid-season due to injury.
MS Dhoni Expected to Make Decision Following N. Srinivasan’s Return as CSK Chairman
Shamik Chakrabarty from Revsportz stated that the Chennai Super Kings anticipate that Dhoni will continue playing for at least another season. N. Srinivasan’s appointment might prompt Dhoni to play for one more season.
"The five-time IPL champions expect MS Dhoni to play for at least one more year. According to sources and CSK insiders, this development follows the return of N. Srinivasan, the former BCCI and ICC president, to helm the franchise once again," Chakrabarty said.

MSD Last Seen in Action for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025
Dhoni last featured in the 2025 IPL, where Chennai Super Kings retained him as an uncapped player for ₹4 crore under the new retention rules.
The wicketkeeper batter returned as captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad suffered an elbow injury following five matches. However, CSK endured a disappointing season. They finished at the bottom of the points table with only four wins from 14 games.
Dhoni scored 196 runs across 13 innings at a strike rate of 135.17. The 44-year-old has not yet confirmed his IPL future and plans to make a decision in December ahead of the mega auction.
MS Dhoni Likely to Continue for One More IPL Season
Shamik Chakrabarty pointed out that speculation about Dhoni’s retirement from the IPL has been ongoing for years. He confirmed that Dhoni is very likely to continue for at least one more IPL season.
"Whenever an IPL comes, over the last few years, there has been ongoing speculation about whether this will be MS Dhoni's last IPL, and if he will hang up his boots after the tournament. Last year, CSK didn’t qualify for the playoffs," Chakrabarty stated.
"Dhoni returned as captain mid-season after Ruturaj Gaikwad, the first-choice captain, suffered an injury. At 44 years old, he is very likely to continue for at least one more season."
Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020. He ended his career with 17,226 runs and 195 stumpings, the highest in international cricket. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter was recently inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame for remarkable contributions to the sport.
