Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced a whopping price for Ajinkya Rahane's team for winning the Irani Cup 2024. The governing body has announced the cash prize of INR 1 crore for winning the title for the first time in 27 years since 1997-98.
The Mumbai team, under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane, has turned into a force to reckon with in the domestic circuit. After winning the last edition of the Ranji Trophy, they made sure that they went on to win the Irani Cup 2024 as they displayed a stellar performance in the game against the Rest of India.
Mumbai posted a total of 537 runs on the board
The Irani Cup 2024 match between the two teams took place at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. The game ended in a draw but it was the Ajinkya Rahane-led side who were declared winners based on the lead in the first innings.
Rahane-led side had a great outing with the bat in the first innings, and it tilted the game in their favour. They were asked to bat first, and after a shaky start, they took command of the game with a solid batting performance from the middle order and the lower order.
Skipper Ajinkya Rahane (97) missed his century by just three runs while Shreyas Iyer (57) slammed a vital half-century that kept the team in the game. Sarfaraz Khan then took the game away from the opposition with his magnificent batting as he played a humongous innings of unbeaten 222 runs.
A solid batting performance saw Ranji Trophy 2023 winners posting a total of 537 runs on the board and then came up with equally great effort with the ball. Although they struggled initially, they made sure that they finished off pretty well, ending the Rest of India's innings on 416 runs, taking a lead of over 100 runs.
Mumbai won based on the lead in the first innings
The start of the second innings didn't go in their favor as they kept losing wickets right from the start. Prithvi Shaw held the fort for his team and hit a half-century to keep his team in the hunt, but he couldn't carry on as he perished after that.
Tanush Kotian, down the order, came up with the gigantic effort with the bat. He slammed unbeaten 114 runs, and also Mohit Avasthi got to his fifty before both the captains shook hands, and Mumbai emerged as the winners. This was the 15th time that Mumbai won the Irani Cup.
