The ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 is reportedly set to be moved out of Bangladesh in the wake of the violent protests taking place across the country.
What began as a student protest over job quotas turned violent in no time. Hundreds of thousands of citizens hit the streets as the protest turned into an anti-government movement.
And it did not take the protest long to turn violent as the citizens clashed with the police force. As per reports, more than 300 people were killed in the violence that has rocked the entire nation.
On Monday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country, bringing an end to her 15-year tenure that began in 2009. Soon after Hasina resigned, the Bangladesh military announced that it would be taking charge.
The violent protest and Hasina's resignation have put the future of the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 in the country in doubt. The tournament was scheduled to be played in Bangladesh in October this year. However, it is highly doubtful now although the ICC is yet to make a final decision on the matter.
"The ICC is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), their security agencies, and our own independent security consultants. Our priority is the safety and well-being of all participants," said an ICC spokesperson.
Mumbai likely to host ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024:
As per reports, India has emerged as the favorite to host the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 if the ICC decides to shift the venue. In that case, the tournament is likely to be played in Mumbai with Wankhede Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium as the two venues, according to a report in CricketNext.
Last year, Wankhede Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai were the venues for the Women's Premier League.
"Two venues are all that is required. Say an arrangement like Wankhede and DY Patil or Delhi and Mohali. Two venues not very far from each other will make it easy to host the tournament.
"If the tournament does move out, which is very likely, Wankhede and DY Patil will make an ideal combination as the turnout at these venues during Women’s Premier League was very good," a source told the news outlet.
The report further stated that the ICC is likely to take the final call by the end of next week. While only time will reveal the ICC's decision, it is highly unlikely that Bangladesh will be hosting the competition.
Even if the situation improves in the coming days, there will be too many challenges for the organizers to ensure that the tournament is conducted smoothly.
