Cricket fans have responded to the appointment of young batter Shubman Gill for the upcoming five-match Test series against England in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 cycle. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) snubbed Jasprit Bumrah, who was vice-captain during the BGT 2024-25.
Jasprit Bumrah led India in three Test matches, including an emphatic win in Perth during the Australia tour. However, he was not considered for full-time captaincy due to his fitness and workload management. Gill, who has never captained India in Tests, has been picked as Rohit Sharma’s successor.
Shubman Gill to Lead India Test Team for the First Time
On Saturday, May 24, the BCCI revealed the squad for the highly anticipated series in England. Shubman Gill will lead the team, with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant serving as his deputy. It is worth mentioning that Jasprit Bumrah is in the squad but has not been included in any leadership role.
India Test Squad For England Tour: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishan, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav
Shubman Gill Becomes the Fifth-Youngest Test Captain in India’s History
Shubman Gill will lead the team in the beginning of a new era for the Indian side, following the retirements of key figures Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Rohit had led the team since early 2022 but failed to guide India to the WTC final in 2025.
The 25-year-old becomes the fifth-youngest Test captain in India’s history, following legends like Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi (21 years, 77 days), Sachin Tendulkar (23 years, 169 days), Kapil Dev (24 years, 48 days), and Ravi Shastri (25 years, 229 days).
Gill has limited experience in red-ball leadership, having captained just five first-class matches, including one Ranji Trophy game. The right-handed batter is currently leading the Gujarat Titans in the IPL and guided the team to the playoffs in his second season.
Fans React as BCCI Appoints Shubman Gill as New Test Captain
The BCCI’s appointment of Shubman Gill as India’s new Test captain has sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some fans welcomed the decision, others expressed disappointment over Jasprit Bumrah being overlooked.
