The hard time continues for former India captain Suryakumar Yadav, as the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has announced its Ranji Trophy 2026-27 squad without him.
After being dropped from India's T20I team shortly after winning the 2026 T20 World Cup as the captain of the national cricket team, Suryakumar Yadav kept himself available for a full Ranji Trophy season.
No Suryakumar Yadav in Mumbai's Ranji Trophy 2026-27 squad
MCA, however, opted not to select the experienced batter, Suryakumar Yadav, for the red-ball domestic cricket tournament. MCA has named another experienced batter, Siddesh Lad, as the captain of the Mumbai state cricket team ahead of the upcoming domestic cricket season. As his deputy, the state cricket board has named the former India U-19 captain, Ayush Mhatre, as the vice-captain of the Ranji Trophy squad.
The squad also has stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan. Musheer Khan, Hardik Tamore, Sharma Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Tushar Deshpande, and Atharva Ankolekar are also named in the team for the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season. Mumbai will start their Ranji Trophy campaign on October 11, through the match against Chandigarh. The venue for the match is yet to be confirmed.
Mumbai was less impressive in 2025, as it was expected to be
In the previous season, Mumbai failed to reach the final of the Ranji Trophy. The final was played between Jammu and Kashmir and Karnataka at the D.R. Bendre Cricket Stadium (KSCA Stadium) in Hubballi, with Jammu and Kashmir as the winner.
Mumbai named a star-studded team for the 2025-26 season, but they lacked consistency throughout the tournament. Former Team India captain Rohit Sharma gave a major boost to the team at the beginning of the tournament, but that did not remain with the team until the end.
Like Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma is also not in this year's squad. With the choice of players, MCA makes it clear that they want to take steps to keep an eye on the future. Appointing Ayush Mhatre as the team's vice-captain is a significant decision taken by the state cricket board.
Under the leadership of Ayush Mhatre, India U-19 won the previous edition of the ICC U-19 World Cup. It will be interesting to see how the batter will perform with the best from the state, with extra responsibility on their backs.
CSK will take a close eye on Ayush Mhatre
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans will also take a close look at Ayush, as the teenager is one of their assets in the Indian Premier League. He began the IPL 2026 like a well-oiled machine, but a sudden injury ruled him out of the tournament, and still, he has yet to return to competitive cricket. Previous updates suggested that Ayush Mhatre began his batting as he continued to be under a rehabilitation process.
