Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hasan is poised to resign from his role before the conclusion of his current tenure. Nazmul Hasana assumed the role of Minister of Youth and Sports on January 11 after being elected to the parliament on January 7.

Nazmul Hasan, who has led the BCB since 2012, secured victory in the Kishoreganj-6 constituency in the polls. Subsequently, Hasan assumed the role of minister within four days. He contributed to the notable success of cricket in the country during his tenure.

Following Hasan’s recent appointment, concerns arose about his ability to maintain his position as the BCB president. If Hasan decides to step down from the BCB, one of the existing governing body members will assume the role of interim president until a successor is elected.

There Are No Problems In The Law – Nazmul Hasan

Addressing concerns about potential conflict, Nazmul Hasan stressed that previous ministers had served in both roles simultaneously and that the practice was not unique to Bangladesh.

“There are no problems in the law about me holding both posts (BCB president and Minister of Youth and Sports). There is no relationship between getting ministry and leaving from the post of BCB because earlier there were several ministers who also fulfilled the roles. It is also there abroad and so that is not the issue,” Nazmul told reporters on Friday.

I Want To Prioritize Everything – Nazmul Hasan

Hasan emphasized the importance of avoiding speculation about prioritizing cricket and expressed a desire to focus on all responsibilities as the Minister of Sports.

“But it would be good if that is not the case (holding both the posts) because then there might be speculations of me prioritizing cricket. I want to prioritize everything (being the Minister of Sports).”

I Can’t Leave Now – Nazmul Hasan

Reflecting on political influences on cricket boards, Hasan emphasized the importance of stability in the country’s cricket administration. He expressed his desire to continue as BCB president, drawing parallels with situations in Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.

“Basically there are quite a few factors here. First thing is that even if I wish for it, I can’t leave now. We have seen this in the case of Zimbabwe where they were suspended for almost two years and also in the case of Sri Lanka. I feel that there can’t be a rush to take a decision which may harm the country’s cricket.”

“One option is to talk to the ICC because there are two things which are very important. One is our term, which ICC always wants that an elected body finish their full term and the other is ICC’s current board’s own term,” he said.

Nazmul Hasan assumed the role of BCB president in 2012 and was unanimously elected twice in 2013 and 2017. Despite initial expectations, former captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza won’t be able to contest the BCB presidency until the next elections in October 2025.

Bangladesh, under the leadership of Shakib Al Hasan, failed to live up to expectations in the recent ODI World Cup. The team finished in 8th place in the table, securing two wins out of nine matches in the league stage of the tournament.
