Indian pacer Akash Deep and England opener Ben Duckett were involved in a heated exchange on Day 2 of the ongoing fifth and final Test at The Oval. It all started when Ben Duckett tried to get under Akash Deep’s skin during the first session of Day 2 at The Oval.

After confidently facing a few deliveries, Duckett taunted the Indian bowler with a cheeky remark, “You won’t be able to get me out here.” Then, the England opener hit a stunning reverse ramp shot that flew over the slips, and the home crowd cheered loudly to spark fire in the bowler.

But Akash Deep didn’t let the comment or the shot distract him. He remained calm and focused, and it paid off quickly. Just a few overs later, Akash dismissed Duckett with a superb delivery that took the edge and was cleanly caught by the Indian wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel.

Duckett walked back after scoring 43 off just 34 balls, which included five boundaries and two sixes. After getting the crucial wicket, Akash celebrated with a loud fist pump, walking up to Duckett with a grin. He even mockingly placed his hand on Duckett’s shoulder while exchanging a few words.

As things were clearly getting tense, KL Rahul quickly pulled Akash away from the scene to avoid any further trouble. After the end of Day 2, England’s batting coach Marcus Trescothick expressed his disappointment over the incident.

It was really strange: Marcus Trescothick on Akash Deep’s celebration on Day 2

Meanwhile, Trescothick felt Akash Deep’s celebration after taking Duckett’s wicket was unusual and a bit over the top. He said that the Indian bowler should have kept things more professional.

Marcus Trescothick was quoted as saying by Sky Sports after the end of Day 2, “I don't think I've ever seen a bowler do that after getting someone out. You see, he obviously has many words, and we've seen it within the series on both sides, but it was just different, wasn't it?”

The England coach further noted, “There's probably no need to sort of walk him off in that fashion. You put your head down and walk off. Your job is done at that point. It was different, yeah. It was strange, really. Back in my day, a lot of players would have just dropped the elbow on him or something else entirely. But this was lighthearted.”

Marcus Trescothick defends balcony gestures at The Oval

Meanwhile, the England batting coach was seen making animated gestures from the dressing room after Ben Duckett’s heated moment with Akash Deep. Explaining his gestures, Trescothick said that he was just having fun with his teammates, joking that in his playing days, players might have reacted more aggressively.

He signed off by saying, “We were chatting on the balcony. Many in my time would have just dropped the elbow on him or something quite different. I was just laughing and joking about it.”

Notably, after restricting England to 247, India lost two wickets for 75 runs on Day 2, with KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan falling for just 7 and 11 runs, respectively.

Earlier, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishan each scalped four wickets to help India not concede much lead to England at The Oval.
