The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to hold a press conference to announce their next Test skipper. As per the reports in Dainik Jagran, it is learned that Shubman Gill will be taking over the charge of the team in the longest format of the game.
The reports claimed that Shubman Gill's coronation as the Test captain will take place on May 23 or 24. While the press conference will be hosted to announce the captain, the Ajit Agarkar-led committee will meet in Mumbai on the same day to pick the Indian squad for the England series.
Five-match Test series will be the first assignment for Shubman Gill as the captain in Tests for India
The five-match Test series will be the first assignment for Shubman Gill as the captain in the format. It's fair to say that the young batter will be having the hardest challenge upfront and would want to script history in his first series as a leader for India.
Shubman Gill also has met a few members of the Indian team management in this regard, discussing about the future. The young batter is also the vice-captain of the team in the ODIs as well as the T20Is and is leading the Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025.
Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket
The Test captain's place in the team became vacant after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket. The premier batter made the decision public through a social media post, and it left many shocked, especially with him expressing his desire to play in the Test against England.
The name of Jasprit Bumrah was also discussed to lead the team, but considering his fitness, the BCCI was against it. The governing body doesn't want the fast bowler to play all the games in the England series, as they are keen to play him in just two or three games.
KL Rahul's name popped up, but reports in PTI claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) isn't looking at him at all, as he is already 33-plus and hasn't been as consistent as he should have been. Hence, they moved ahead with Shubman Gill as captain.
Rishabh Pant will be named as the vice-captain of the team
The reports also added that Rishabh Pant will be named as the vice-captain of the team, as the BCCI believes that he is best suited for the role. The keeper-batter has been the team's best batter in the Tests for the last few years, and with an average of 42 plus with hundreds in Australia, England, and South Africa, and seven scores between 90 and 99, he will act as deputy to Gill.
Gill will have a great challenge as a captain, as senior players have started to move away. There have been talks about Virat Kohli's retirement as well, and if that happens, the young batter will have to lead a fragile batting lineup.
