New Zealand have named their 15-player squad for the upcoming three-match T20 International series against Australia, beginning on October 18, with all three matches scheduled at North Sydney Oval. The selectors have recalled Eden Carson, Molly Penfold, Hannah Rowe, and Bella James to the T20I squad.

The series will be New Zealand’s first international assignment of the 2026-27 season. Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates, and Lea Tahuhu have all retired from international cricket, while the White Ferns are also preparing for the inaugural 2027 Women’s Champions Trophy in India, which will be played in the T20I format.

New Zealand Name Squad For Australia T20Is, Eden Carson Returns

Eden Carson is the most notable name among the four returning players. The 25-year-old off-spinner returns after undergoing elbow surgery last December, which kept her out of action for several months.

Carson played an important role in New Zealand’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, taking nine wickets during the campaign. Her return adds experience to a spin attack that also includes captain Amelia Kerr, Nensi Patel and Flora Devonshire.

“To be back in the White Ferns environment is really special,” Carson said. “The rehab process has taken a lot of patience, but I’ve been fortunate to have great support around me and I’m feeling ready to get back out there and contribute.”

Molly Penfold and Hannah Rowe return to strengthen the pace attack following the retirements of Devine and Tahuhu. Rowe, who has 47 T20I caps, last played a T20I in September 2024, while Penfold has featured in 11 T20Is since her debut in 2022.

Bella James has played one T20I for New Zealand, against Australia in March 2025, and also featured in two ODIs against the Australians in late 2024.

Izzy Gaze Ruled Out as Polly Inglis Takes Gloves

Wicketkeeper-batter Izzy Gaze will miss the series after undergoing surgery for a persistent thumb injury. She is targeting a return to cricket in early 2027, with Polly Inglis set to take over the wicketkeeping duties in her absence.

Rowe and James spent part of the winter with New Zealand A in Sri Lanka, giving them valuable match practice before the Australia tour. Penfold, meanwhile, recently played for the Sandgate Redcliffe Gators in Australia’s KFC T20 Max competition.

The squad retains a strong core from the recent T20 World Cup group, with 11 players from that squad included for the Australia series. Amelia Kerr will continue to lead the side, which also features Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Bree Illing, Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Georgia Plimmer and Izzy Sharp.

Dean Brownlie Takes Charge as Interim Head Coach

The Australia tour will also mark the beginning of Dean Brownlie’s stint as interim head coach. Brownlie has served as New Zealand’s batting coach for nearly four years and takes charge following Ben Sawyer’s departure.

Brownlie welcomed the returning quartet and said the series would provide an important test for a squad combining experience with emerging players.

“We’re excited to welcome back Eden, Hannah, Molly, and Bella. There’s a balance of experience and future-focus in this squad and it’s going to be a chance for the group to test themselves against a quality side,” Brownlie said.

“Competing against the best in the world is always going to be a challenge, but it also provides a lot of opportunities to learn and strengthen skillsets within that.”

The White Ferns will depart for Australia on October 12 and play a warm-up match against the Governor General’s XI on October 15. The three T20Is against Australia will then be played at North Sydney Oval, beginning on October 18.
