Shubman Gill has reportedly been locked in as India's captain for the ODI World Cup in South Africa in 2027. The development comes after rumours started surfacing over the last few days that his days as the Indian skipper might be numbered.

Shubman Gill was named India's full-time ODI captain in October 2025, around five months after being named the country's full-time Test captain. He also led India in T20Is on an interim basis in 2024, and has been the captain of the Gujarat Titans since that year as well.

Earlier reports indicated that Shubman Gill might be removed as ODI skipper

Earlier this month, some reports had indicated that the BCCI was looking for a full overhaul in the captaincy set-up of the Indian team. Specifically, the T20I team.

Even though Gill isn't a first-choice player for India in T20Is, the decisions there apparently had a ripple effect on his ODI captaincy as well. The earliest reports had suggested that the BCCI wants to move on from Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain because of his poor form with the bat.

A few names were proposed, but the one that stuck as his replacement was that of Shreyas Iyer. Like Gill, Iyer is not a first-choice player in T20Is either.

The overhaul of the ODI team seems to have arisen out of a stance that the BCCI have held over the years. The BCCI has always insisted on having the same captain for the Indian team in both ODIs and T20Is. With Shreyas Iyer reported to become the T20I captain, the reports said that he would also become the ODI captain.

While Gill is the captain, Iyer is also a first-choice player in ODIs and is officially Shubman Gill's vice-captain in the format.

"Shubman Gill is locked in for the 2027 ODI World Cup" - Journalist Rohit Juglan

On his YouTube channel, journalist Rohit Juglan addressed the reports and clarified that Gill's captaincy is not going anywhere.

"There is this thing going on with Gill's ODI captaincy. What happened to it? Who is coming to take it away from him? You tell me, 'this is the reason why Gill won't remain captain'. With respect to ODI cricket, I can tell you straightaway that you will find Shubman's name there as a captain. He is going to lead your [Indian] side for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Shubman Gill will remain your [Indian] captain in ODIs. As simple as that," he said.

Shubman Gill as ODI captain and in IPL 2026

Gill has had a tough initiation to One-Day international cricket as the captain of India. His first series was in Australia in October 2025, and India lost 2-1.

He was injured for the home ODI series against South Africa in November, but returned as ODI captain against New Zealand in January 2026. India lost that series as well with the same 2-1 margin.

In IPL 2026, his leadership - among other things - has led the Gujarat Titans to the top of the points table. GT are currently on a five-match winning streak and are in pole position to make the playoffs.
