The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held its Special General Meeting on Saturday. The staging of the remainder of the IPL 2021 was the key agenda for the board, and it refused to discuss other issues, not least about the pending payments to its domestic players.
It had earlier been reported that the domestic Indian players have not been paid their share of money as compensation for the cancellation of the Ranji Trophy 2020 due to the pandemic.
According to a report in Cricbuzz, one of the associations even raised this issue for discussion but was turned down by BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and vice-president Rajeev Shukla, stating that it was not part of the agenda of this particular meeting.
Earlier, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal had said that the board is yet to receive the details of the compensation package from any of the state units. However, he revealed that the salary for the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournaments have been processed.
“We have to discuss with states because they have to tell us who would have played, how many matches, who would have been in reserves. None of the states have sent any proposal for the compensation package,” Dhumal had told PTI.
“I can also confirm that payments for the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy have also been disbursed,”
A former BCCI official and state unit veteran said it’s hard to devise a uniform formula for the compensation as it is uncertain which player would have featured in how many games.
“The treasurer is right. The BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has announced the compensation but how do you determine which are the players who would play 8 games, or 10 games in a season? The reserve players get half, so how do you compute that?” the official said.
BCCI announces UAE to host the remainder of IPL in September-October
In the main agenda of the meeting, the board announced that the remaining 31 matches, including the playoffs, will be staged in the UAE in the September-October window later in the year. The board said they have taken the decision to shift the tournament out of India “considering the monsoon season in India in the months of September-October”.
This would, however, put the Indian players in the bio-bubble for a longer duration. They will leave soon for the WTC final against New Zealand in England. Then Virat Kohli’s team will take on hosts England in a 5-Test series from August 4 to September 14.
The IPL will run till mid-October, till the time the T20 World Cup would be around the corner, which will run until mid-November.
