The entire cricket fraternity is praising Rohit Sharma, the former India captain, for laying the foundation stone in 2024, which eventually led the team to lift the 2026 T20 World Cup trophy. Team India created history by claiming back-to-back trophies.

In a recent interview, the current captain of the T20I team revealed how they transformed the team's approach in the last couple of years, replacing Rahul Dravid-Rohit Sharma's ideology.

Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav injected new philosophy into the team

When the Men in Blue claimed the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma was the captain and Rahul Dravid was the head coach of the team. After the conclusion of the tournament, Rohit retired from the format, and Rahul's tenure as the head coach came to an end.

Team India entered into a new era with Suryakumar Yadav as the captain and Gautam Gambhir as the head coach. With new appointments, the team welcomes new thoughts as well.

Gautam Gambhir, in multiple interviews after winning the T20 World Cup 2026, said that under his regime, there is no place for individual milestones in the team. The captain, Suryakumar Yadav, echoed the same in the latest interview.

We will not pay attention to personal milestones-Suryakumar Yadav

Yadav straightaway said that they were sure about the fact that the brand of cricket India played in the 2024 T20 World Cup was not going to work. So, they injected their own vision into the squad, which gradually spread like a virus. The New thought was to break the superstar culture to prioritise every member of the team.

"We knew the way we played the 2024 T20 World Cup — that brand of cricket — won’t work going ahead. So we decided: from here on, we will not pay attention to personal milestones; the goal is to win games. If you noticed, till the semifinals none of our players were top run-getters or top wicket-takers," said Suryakumar Yadav in an interview with the Indian Express.

"But we qualified and kept winning. Every game, every player contributed. It was very important to spread this thing like a virus in the team from the start. We planted this team culture 18 months back," the captain told.

We put players in tough situations-Suryakumar Yadav

In the same interview, he further stated that in the past, people used to think that the team performed differently in ICC events and bilateral series. The management also tried to change the thought. To make the team performance even, they started to perform with extra courage and intensity.

"Everyone used to think India plays differently in bilaterals and differently in ICC events. Yehi soch badalni thi (We wanted to change this thinking). We will play ICC events the same way we play bilaterals more courageously, more openly. We put players in tough situations because we knew that in big games, handling pressure is the key", Suryakumar Yadav further added.

SKY has already set its goal for the next target, the Olympics 2028. However, there has been concern as he will turn 37 by then and might not feature in the team with the amount of talent India have especially in T20 cricket.
