Suryakumar Yadav is likely to remain as Team India T20I captain despite speculations around Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson as the probable successors for the high-profile role. Suryakumar’s downward form elevated the speculations.

However, despite his poor form in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) season with the Mumbai Indians, he is likely to remain as the leader of the Men in Blue brigade. There is no denial that the middle-order batter’s form is alarming, but the team management, both the Mumbai Indians' team management and Team India, are reportedly not yet ready to give up on the proven batter.

Suryakumar Yadav to remain as the captain

There are some speculations over his fitness as well. According to some claims on social media platforms, Surya has developed a wrist issue. A recent report, published on RevSportz, denies those claims.

According to the report, he is fit and fine, and there is an issue related ot his wrist. He is doing well in the nets as well. SKY looks in terrific form during the net session, but somehow, runs are not coming from his bat.

Players can be dropped because of a lack of form. But in this case, the player's name is Suryakumar Yadav, under whose leadership Team India claimed their historic third ICC T20 World Cup trophy this year.

In this tournament, too, Suryakumar Yadav’s form was up to the mark for sure, but his role was crucial. During the team’s first match in the tournament, which was against the USA cricket team, when India was in massive trouble, the skipper delivered an 84-run knock off 49 balls.

Form declines, trust remains

On a challenging track, against the arch-rival Pakistan, the right-handed batter’s 32 off 29 balls was very crucial. He concluded the 2026 T20 WC with 242 runs in nine innings. Surya’s batting stats cause more worries in the IPL 2026 season.

So far, the Mumbai Indians batter has 195 runs from 11 innings, averaging 17.72 and striking at 144.44. Amid the poor form, some reports are suggesting a change in the India T20I captaincy.

“Suryakumar Yadav is not walking a captaincy tightrope at the moment, and an immediate change in India’s T20I leadership is all but ruled out, RevSportz understands. It is learnt that the incumbent skipper still has the faith of the selection committee and, as RevSportz already reported, subject to his fitness, he will lead the team in England in the five T20Is in July,” according to a RevSportz report, published on May 14, 2026.

No injury threast for now

The report denies Suryakumar Yadav’s injury suspicions as well. Stating, “This correspondent has been covering MI’s nets sessions and matches for a month-and-a-half now, and not for once did it appear that he has been having any discomfort while batting.

In fact, he has been in excellent net form, but somehow, runs are not coming in matches. Surya is probably not out of form. He is definitely out of runs.”
