These speculations gained further momentum when the Indian chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, and head coach, Gautam Gambhir, denied any guarantee for Kohli’s selection in India’s squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2027. They neither denied nor confirmed his participation.

However, Ajit Agarkar dismissed the rumors about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retiring after the Australia series. The Indian chief selector confirmed that they have successfully cleared all fitness requirements and remain a key part of India’s long-term ODI plans.
Agarkar clarified that Kohli and Rohit continue to be fully committed to the team’s goals but denied making any comment on the ICC World Cup 2026 selection. On the other hand, Gautam Gambhir said that Kohli and Rohit’s presence will be crucial during the challenging Australian tour.
The Indian head coach focused on the importance of staying in the moment and expressed confidence that the two stalwarts will continue to deliver for India in the years to come in the format.
