New Zealand National Cricket Team captain Kane Williamson provided a massive update on his injured thumb after winning the World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh National Cricket Team at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Friday, October 13.
Kane Williamson played his first competitive game for New Zealand in a long period of time. He looked great out in the middle and was involved in two terrific partnerships with Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell and played a key role in the victory of the BlackCaps by 8 wickets against the Bangla Tigers.
The Kiwi skipper scored 78 runs off 107 balls, with 8 fours and 1 six, in the match. However, he retired hurt after suffering a blow on his thumb. With his half-century, he created history as he became the New Zealand player with the most 50-plus scores across formats. Ross Taylor had 133 50-plus scores and now Williamson has 134.
During the post-match presentation ceremony, Kane Williamson came to talk with some protection on his thumb. While talking about his injury, the 33-year-old said that his thumb turned fat and colorful after the blow and he will go for scans tomorrow. He said:
“Just got a bit fat and colorful straight away so got a scan tomorrow, but hopefully it’s okay. [on the knee] It’s okay, glad to get through the game from a knee perspective, but from a team perspective it was great as well.”
He was outstanding – Kane Williamson on Lockie Ferguson
Kane Williamson seemed impressed with the performance of his bowlers and he lauded them for restricting the Bangla Tigers to a modest score of 245/9. He said:
“I thought the guys in the first half of the performance were excellent. They just banged the wicket hard, it was a bit variable. And then later it was nice to build those partnerships and take the game late. Midway through the powerplay, we realized that we should hit the surface. Not a bad surface, and a really good competitive wicket.”
Kane Williamson also praised express pacer Lockie Ferguson for his Player of the Match performance against Bangladesh. He said:
“[on Lockie] He was outstanding. You come here expecting the spinners to play a big role, but the seamers did really well today. Lockie he just keeps running in, bowling at a high pace and he hasn’t had some of that good fortune, so thoroughly deserved. For both the seamers and the spinners.”
Kane Williamson signed off by stating that he enjoyed his time in the middle and praised Daryl Mitchell for making valuable contributions consistently for the team. Kane Williamson said:
“It was nice to be out there and be a part of some of those partnerships, some tough periods with the new ball were hard work. But just wanted to build partnerships and get close to that target.
“[on Daryl Mitchell] He’s a great competitor, makes valuable contributions more often than not, he’s a team-first guy and he’s great to watch.”
