New Zealand and Pakistan go head to head in the second T20I of the tri-series in Christchurch on Saturday, October 8. This is the final international assignment for both teams heading into the T20 World Cup in Australia. Bangladesh is the third team in this tri-series. Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 21 runs in the first T20I and are currently topping the points table. All three teams play each other twice in the series with the top two teams playing the final on October 14.
New Zealand lost an ODI series against Australia heading into this T20I series. Pakistan also lost a bilateral T20I series against England at home. They lost the series 4-3 after leading the series 3-2 at one point. The series loss has made former Pakistan cricketers criticise the team heading into the mega event in Australia.
“This series was vital for us. We need to improve in the shortest format. I also mentioned at the toss, that we have a good bowling attack. Haris is bowling well, and he is improving everyday. I think entire Pakistan was waiting for this, even we were happy to host England” said Babar Azam in the post-match presentation after the final T20I.
Mohammad Rizwan has been in prime form in T20Is since the T20 World Cup 2021. He is the number one-ranked T20I batter at the moment. Pakistan skipper Babar Azam is third on the rankings. The onus will be on the two to see through the series once again. Pakistan have won 6 and lost 8 of the 14 T20Is they’ve played this year.
New Zealand have lost just one T20I this year. They have played 10 games in total. They have won against West Indies, Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands throughout the year. They were the finalists of the T20 World Cup 2021 and will enter into the next T20 World Cup as the dark horse.
