MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) returned to winning ways with a five-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana in the ongoing IPL 2025.
It was Chennai Super Kings' second win of the season and came after five consecutive defeats. The Chennai-based outfit began its campaign with a win over arch-rivals Mumbai Indians before losing five games in a row.
Chennai Super Kings have had a troublesome start
They also lost the services of their captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was ruled out of the tournament due to an elbow injury.
On Monday (April 14), Chennai Super Kings put behind all the setbacks and came up with a match-winning performance. Bowling first, they restricted LSG to 166/7 in 20 overs. With the bat, the five-time champions chased down the total with three balls remaining.
Toss controversy mars CSK's win:
Chennai Super Kings' much-needed win was marred by a huge controversy. The fans have been levelling match-fixing allegations following the incident that took place during the toss.
LSG captain Rishabh Pant threw the coin quite far before MS Dhoni leaned in and whispered his call into the match referee’s ear. The match referee then walked towards the coin and conveyed the result to the captains. The broadcasters quickly zoomed in on the coin, revealing that it was heads.

However, commentator Murali Kartik was heard asking the match referee whether the call was tails. In response, the match referee said something that was not audible in the video posted on IPL's official social media page.
In the end, it was declared that MS Dhoni made the correct call, leaving many stunned. And as soon as the toss concluded, several fans took to social media to express their views. Here are some of those reactions:

Toss has to shout out loud right?
Whispering in referee eyes looks not good or fair. @BCCI @ICC @IPL https://t.co/fGkqJ8bIt7
Why didn't M.S. say heads or tails into the mic. Is it okay to whisper it into the toss representative's ear? https://t.co/NmcAkuHtGI

This is not the first time that IPL has grabbed the headlines due to a toss. Last year, a huge controversy took place when ex-Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain Faf du Plessis had seemingly alleged a controversy around the coin toss during the game against the Mumbai Indians.
He was caught on camera telling about the incident to Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins. Following the incident, the broadcasters began zooming in on the coin.
