India red-ball captain Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma has said that the captaincy controversy in Indian cricket won’t impact the Test skipper once he enters the field.

On Wednesday, Virat Kohli addressed media before the South Africa departure and he made some big revelations about the captaincy change. Notably, Kohli decided to step down from the T20I captaincy to manage his workload and the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly told that he personally requested Kohli not to quit the T20I captaincy but he didn’t agree and the selectors didn’t want to have 2 white-ball captains that’s why Kohli was removed from ODI captaincy and Rohit Sharma was given the entire white-ball leadership responsibility.

Meanwhile, Kohli in the press conference revealed that he was not asked to reconsider his T20I captaincy relinquishing decision and it was received very well by the BCCI.

Speaking on the Khelneeti podcast, Kohli’s childhood coach Sharma mentioned that the Test captain is “not greedy” and has a “lot of self-belief” and the ongoing controversy will not impact his performance.

“It might be in the back of his mind, but once he steps on the ground, I don’t think it would impact him. Virat is not greedy for anything; he has a lot of self-belief and he knows he will give his 100 per cent.”

“It’s obviously a little disturbing for any player when such conflicts or controversy happens. But I’m hopeful that the board will be tackling this situation efficiently and it won’t be dragged further.”

Sharma also believes that the usage of strong words from Kohli and the BCCI were unnecessary. He asserted:

I don’t want to speak much on the subject because it’s directly linked with Virat. But I feel that it could’ve been better if such strong words weren’t used from both sides. The team is doing good; I don’t think we need a needless controversy.”
