The former Pakistan chief selector Mohammad Wasim has questioned whether the team management and selectors should continue with Shan Masood in the Test team after his 95-run knock in the third and final Test against England in Birmingham.

Mohammad Wasim wants Pakistan to move on from Shan Masood
After Pakistan was whitewashed by England in the three-match Test series 0-3, Mohammad Wasim has pointed out that Shan Masood has followed a similar pattern throughout his career, where he ended up playing one big score after several poor innings, and that helps him keep his place.
The former cricketer believes that Pakistan should now take a clear decision about the 36-year-old batter’s future, especially with a new ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle ahead. Wasim believes Pakistan should not look at Masood’s latest 95 in isolation.
He stressed that if Pakistan genuinely wants to build a team for the long term, it should consider moving on from Shan Masood completely as a player, considering many factors, mainly his age. Amid this, Mike Hesson breaks his silence on becoming Pakistan’s permanent Test head coach.
Mohammad Wasim told a Pakistani journalist on his YouTube channel, "So, are you going to watch the big movie or just watch the trailer? That is something you need to decide. I want these guys to win, but this is not the first time this has happened. It has happened before as well. If you want to move on, then you have to completely move on.”
One good inning cannot change the bigger picture
The former Pakistan selector believes the management must look at his overall career pattern before taking a decision. He feels Pakistan needs to think about whether Masood, who has so far played only 50 Tests, can remain a long-term option for the Test team.
He also pointed out that Shan has not yet produced the level of consistency expected from a player with 50 tests of experience, even when he was the test captain. Wasim stressed that Pakistan now needs to make a firm call instead of continuing with the same cycle after every good innings.
Wasim further noted, “You can give them the advantage you want to give, especially in the leadership role. But that advantage has not yet reached the level of someone who has played 50 or 70 Tests. I don't think there is any harm in moving on. If it works, it works.”
Domestic cricket could be the next option for Shan Masood
However, Wasim suggested an alternative option for Masood. He noted that when a player fails to deliver, he can always be sent back to domestic cricket to regain form and prove himself before returning to the national team.
He added, “You can ask him to go back and play domestic cricket.”
