Zimbabwe coach Dave Houghton expressed disappointment with his team’s loss against Namibia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier Africa Final 2023. Houghton described their performance as ‘awful’ and ‘one of the worst games’ associated with the team.

Zimbabwe posted a total of 132/8 after opting to bat first in Windhoek on Wednesday, November 22. Namibia opener Nikolaas Davin scored 89 runs off 45 balls, including 10 boundaries and four sixes, to help the team chase down the target with five overs to spare.

We Got Everything Wrong – Dave Houghton

Speaking after the loss, Dave Houghton stated that everything went wrong for Zimbabwe in that game. Houghton highlighted poor batting and bowling performances despite the team’s hard training and preparation.

“I have just spent quite a bit of time in the changeroom with the team after that game and, when you ask what went wrong, as far as I am concerned, we got everything wrong,” Houghton said.

“We were awful today, embarrassingly bad. I think it’s probably one of the worst games that I have ever been associated with in a Zimbabwean jersey.”

“Why it happens, I have absolutely no idea. We train hard, we train with specifics. The guys worked really hard, they had enough energy coming into this game, but we batted poorly and followed that up by bowling poorly and our fielding was average.”

Terrible Start To This Tournament – Dave Houghton

Dave Houghton stated that they acknowledged the importance of qualifying for the next year’s T20 World Cup. The former cricketer stated that his side needs to win all five of their remaining matches in the tournament.

“It’s a terrible start to this tournament, but we do know we’ve got to win the next five games and still qualify,” Houghton further stated.

“That’s important for us, but not my best day and certainly not my happiest day. In fact, I feel like we should be all out here apologising to our fans”

Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania, along with Zimbabwe, are competing for the two spots for the T20 World Cup 2024, which is set to be played in the West Indies and the USA. The tournament between the teams will be played in a round-robin format.
