Chief Executive of Cricket Australia (CA), Todd Greenberg, is keeping the doors open to host the prestigious Ashes Test series in India. During a recent interview, the Australian cricket executive mentioned that as CA is keeping good relationships with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), they have no issue in hosting the Ashes on Indian soil.
The Ashes is one of the most celebrated sports rivalries across the globe. Like India and Pakistan, the rivalry between Australia and England holds special significance in cricket since 1882. Currently, CA and ECB share the rights to hold the 5-match Test series every four years.

Ashes matches, either in England or in the land of kangaroos, that’s the tradition that remains intact for ages. In modern cricket, where the game is evolving in a way, and discussions are underway to revive the oldest, longest format of the game, the historic Ashes is also surrounded by the air of the new age.
Recently, CA has taken multiple steps with their T20 franchise league, the Big Bash League (BBL). The opening match of the 2026 Big Bash League is all set to be held in Chennai, India. CA also proposed that all of the BBL franchises think about privatizing their respective shares to evaluate the market values. The cricket governing body of the nation is doing all these things to reform their financial status, addressing the global audience.
Why does Cricket Australia need to host the Ashes outside Australia and England?
By securing a BBL match in India, CA makes it clear that they have the desire to attract the Indian market, which is known for its love for cricket.
While Twenty20 cricket has the momentum, Test cricket witnessed a lack of interest and empty seats across multiple venues. As CA's interest in the Indian cricket market is clear, should they consider the Ashes in India in the future?
Todd Greenberg responded by saying they are willing to keep all the possible options on the table, given their relationship with the ECB and BCCI.
“We'd have to be open to consider all options," Greenberg told BBC Sport in a recent interview.
"Our relationship with the ECB but also the BCCI is very strong. And clearly, there are opportunities in India to put more content into certain areas. That's not something we are currently planning, but it would certainly be open for consideration."

Greenberg expressed that Test cricket between Australia, England and India can still prove impactful on the ground as these three teams have the potential to attract attention from parts of the globe. So, for him, Ashes in India is not completely impossible, but currently not on their bucket list.
"I think Test cricket between us, England and India is still very strong, probably bucking the trend as to other parts of the world. So we want to make sure we continue to grow it and strengthen it,” he added.
