Over The Next Three Years I Want To Be The Best Finisher In The World - Marcus Stoinis

Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis talked about his ambition of becoming the best finisher in the world in the coming years.

The right-hander had opted out of Australia’s white-ball tours to West Indies and Bangladesh earlier citing bubble fatigue and will now return to action during the second half of the IPL 2021, plying his trade for the Delhi Capitals. He has also been named in Australia’s 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup.

Until now Marcus Stoinis has played different roles in the shortest format. He is an opener, a successful one, for Melbourne Stars but bats in the lower-middle order for Australia and the Capitals. The 32-year-old reckons he has got a brilliant opportunity to strengthen his name as a finisher in the coming months in the UAE.

“My next phase, the way I see it, over the next three years I want to be not only the best finisher in Australia, I want to be the best finisher in the world,” Marcus Stoinis told ESPNcricinfo

“So that’s what I’ve spent my time thinking about and preparing myself for. I’ve got a great opportunity to do it with Delhi under Punter [coach Ricky Ponting], and a great opportunity in this World Cup.

He has so far played 161 T20 matches, in which he averages 32 with the bat while striking at 133.

The burly all-rounder feels the Capitals side has some incredibly talented players this season and they should be able to “do something special” – they did reach the final last season, but lost to Mumbai Indians; this season, the Capitals would be wanting to one step further.

“The key for us is going to this tournament having each other’s back, looking to play like we’ve got nothing to lose because at the end of the day, we don’t have anything to lose.

“I think if we play with that freedom and that excitement, we’re going to do something special. I think that’s the way we’ve got to attack that. There’s enough talent. There’s so many good players in our team that there’s no reason why we shouldn’t,” he stated.

Rishabh Pant has been retained as the Delhi captain despite Shreyas Iyer returning after recovering from a shoulder injury. Pant led the side to the top of the table claiming 6 wins in 8 matches during the first half of the tournament. They face Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday in Dubai.
