Pakistan stand-in captain Shadab Khan is hopeful that senior players like Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam will get the much-deserved respect following his nation’s loss in the T20I series against Afghanistan. 

Afghanistan won were winless against Pakistan in T20Is ahead of the start of the T20I series has now won back-to-back games in Sharjah and also won its first-ever T20I series against Pakistan. The final match will be played on Monday, March 27. The Afghans won the first T20I by six wickets and the second by seven wickets respectively.

Addressing the post-match press conference after the second T20I, stand-in skipper Shadab Khan said that he is now expecting the senior players in the squad like Babar and Rizwan to be seen with much more respect now that the young players did not stand up on the given opportunities.

“No matter whether Babar and Rizwan are performing or not, they have always been criticized about their strike rates,” Shadab told reporters after the second T20I.

“As a nation, we wanted to give opportunities to the youngsters who have done well in the PSL and score quick runs with healthy strike rates. I am not against experiments and I will back these youngsters but experience matters a lot. Hopefully, our seniors will get much-deserved respect from the country and the media after this series” he added further.

Meanwhile, this is the first time, Afghanistan has won a T20I series against a top T20I side. Pakistan were the third-ranked T20I side ahead of the start of the series while the Afghans were ranked tenth. 

Pakistan, on the other hand, was without five of their key players including Shaheen Afridi, Fakhar Zaman and Haris Rauf along with the likes of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. Youngsters like Saim Ayub, Tayyab Tahir, and fast bowlers Ihsanullah and Zaman Khan made their T20I debuts in the series against Afghanistan. 

Pakistan chose to bat first in the second T20I, but the inexperienced top-order was dismissed quickly. Imad Wasim smashed 64 not out off 57 balls and captain Shadab Khan made 32 to increase the final total to 130 for 6.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (44) and Ibrahim Zadran (38) led Afghanistan’s chase before Najibullah Zadran scored a rapid unbeaten 23 and Mohammad Nabi was 14 not out to guide their team to 133 for 3 with a ball to spare.
