Moeen Ali spoke about leading England against Pakistan in the forthcoming T20I series, saying that it was something that was meant to happen.
Ali, who will lead the side in Jos Buttler’s absence, has roots in the country and will have a fantastic opportunity to lead England as they prepare for the next T20 World Cup.
Ali claimed that guiding England in Pakistan is something that was intended to happen and that the timing is also ideal in an interview with BBC Sport before the first T20I.
Before the first T20 match on Tuesday in Karachi, Moeen said to BBC Sport, “It was meant to be.”
The timing is perfect for me to lead England there, which feels wonderful after such a long period.
“Although I have played there previously, it is incredible and meaningful to do it while representing England. I hope we can play some terrific cricket and please the crowd because I am enthusiastic about it.”
Pakistan have always been a really talented team: Moeen Ali
Ali further asserted that when Pakistan plays England at home, the sport will truly feel like it has returned to Pakistan.
“Other teams have toured there already but when England go there, that’s when cricket in Pakistan will really feel like it’s back,” said Ali.
Pakistan has always had a tremendously talented team, but they must play in front of their own supporters and children in order to motivate the upcoming generation.
Ali also discussed his particular relationship with Saqlain Mushtaq and his favourite Pakistani player. The England all-rounder praised the Pakistani coach as one of the best he has ever worked with and claimed to call him his “ustaad.”
“The one player I always loved and still love is Saeed Anwar, I loved his batting,” said Moeen.
“I call him my ustaad (teacher), “He’s one of the greatest coaches I have ever worked with, definitely the best spin coach,” said Ali.
Pakistan and England will play the first of seven Twenty20 International matches today in Karachi.
