Fakhar Zaman, who did not start his ICC Cricket World Cup campaign auspiciously has now redeemed one of the greatest comebacks for Pakistan. Zaman scored a terrific century against New Zealand and took his team over the line in a must-win encounter. Fakhar Zaman scored 126 runs off 81 balls while chasing a massive 402 runs in a rain-affected match in Bengaluru. His innings comprised eight fours and 11 sixes.

Fakhar Zaman was also the man of the match in Pakistan’s win against Bangladesh where he scored 81 off just 74 balls, hitting three fours and seven sixes in his innings. This can be rendered as one of the greatest comebacks for Pakistan where a player who was benched for his poor show in the initial stages, plays a key role in the fight for a semi-final spot.

Fakhar Zaman as an opener has a really good record. He is the only player who has scored a double-century in ODIs for Pakistan. In this World Cup, he has hit eighteen sixes in just two matches. Pakistan which was struggling with four back-to-back defeats can now be seen as one of the contenders for the Semi-finals and Fakhar has played a key role in this development.

Fakhar Zaman’s performance as an opener in ODIs has sparked a debate on the chance of him opening in T20Is. Currently, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan open the batting for Pakistan in T20Is. Mohammad Amir talked about how he was abused when he suggested that Fakhar should open the innings in T20Is and he said that either Babar Azam or Mohammad Rizwan should be demoted.

“I was abused when I said Fakhar Zaman should open the innings in T20I cricket too. One of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan should be demoted,” said Mohammad Amir.

Imad Wasim also wants Fakhar to open the innings in T20Is. For Pakistan, their main focus currently is on the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as they still have a chance to make it through to the semi-finals. They will play their last round-robin league match against England and they would need to win that match with a huge margin in order to ensure a spot in the top four or expect New Zealand to lose their match against Sri Lanka.
