India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2026
PC: X

Pakistan is all set to boycott its fixture against India (India vs. Pakistan) on February 15 for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The Government of Pakistan on Sunday suggested the Pakistan cricket team skip the high-octane match. Though the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is yet to issue a formal letter to the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the government's directive.

As per the latest reports, PCB is yet to send a formal letter to the ICC, though the ICC has already warned that the boycott could attract a series of punishments that will ultimately harm Pakistan cricket.

Why did the Pakistan government ask PCB to boycott the India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2026 match?

The whole situation was created because of a strict stance of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), as they refused to travel to India to play the T20 World Cup 2026.

BCB requested the council to shift their matches from India to Sri Lanka, as they had safety and security concerns over their players in India. ICC did grant Bangladesh's request and gave the board a 24-hour ultimatum. BCB officials remained unmoved from their position in response. ICC named Scotland in place of Bangladesh.

After the snub of the Bangladesh cricket team from the T20 World Cup 2026, PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi said that they were thinking about all possibilities, including an entire tournament boycott. Days after a meeting between Naqvi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the government asked the cricket board to skip their match against India to show protest and solidarity with Bangladesh.

What can happen next?

If the Pakistan cricket board acts according to the government's suggestion, then it can easily invite a series of troubles. ICC will not hesitate to sanction a series of strict actions against them. The possible actions by the International Cricket Council can heavily damage both Pakistan cricket's revenue and reputation.

According to media reports, the ICC not only questioned the Pakistan government’s decision but also urged the PCB to consider the “significant and long-term implications for cricket in its own country,” warning that the move could impact the global cricket ecosystem.

Steps ICC can take if Pakistan boycotts clash against India:

According to the PTI report, ICC can drag the Pakistan Cricket Board to court to ask to pay compensation to the host broadcaster. In the 55-match T20 World Cup 2026, the India vs. Pakistan match is considered the most valuable game. An India vs. Pakistan match can be valued from INR 200 crore to INR 250 crore, almost double in comparison to other fixtures.

Other possible steps the ICC can take against Pakistan:

1. Loss of World Test Championship (WTC) points.

2. Negative impact on ICC rankings.

3. Top cricket-playing nations can refuse to tour Pakistan for bilateral series.

4. Ban on overseas players in the Pakistan Super League.

5. ICC can bar PCB from its share of central revenue.
