The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided not to extend the contract of the women’s team head coach, Muhammad Wasim, following the side’s underwhelming performance in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025. The board is reportedly exploring the option of appointing a foreign coach to bring a fresh approach.

Pakistan had a forgettable campaign in the ODI World Cup, failing to secure a single victory in the seven matches they played. The team suffered four defeats, while three games were washed out due to rain. They finished seventh in the eight-team table and could slip further if Bangladesh win their next game.

According to a report by The Times of India, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was dissatisfied with the women’s team’s poor performances under Muhammad Wasim.

"PCB insiders revealed that Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was unhappy with the team’s overall performance and Wasim’s inability to bring visible improvement," the report read.

Wasim was appointed as the women’s team head coach last year. Under his tenure, Pakistan lost the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup in the semi-finals against Sri Lanka and managed only one win from four matches at the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.

PCB Considers Hiring Foreign Coach to Revamp Pakistan Women’s Cricket

Muhammad Wasim came under heavy scrutiny, largely due to the team’s stagnant batting performance, which was expected to improve under a former international batter. Pakistan’s batting continued to be their weakest department in major tournaments.

According to PTI, several staff members described Wasim as difficult to approach and lacking effective communication. His strained relationships and inability to inspire progress reportedly contributed to the PCB’s decision not to renew his contract.

In response, the board is now considering appointing a foreign coach to bring fresh ideas and direction to the women’s team. An official announcement regarding the appointment is expected soon as the PCB looks to revamp its women’s cricket structure.

Pakistan’s Women’s ODI World Cup campaign was plagued by inconsistency, rain disruptions, and a series of heavy defeats, leaving them without a single win in the tournament.

The team opened their campaign with a seven-wicket loss to Bangladesh, followed by an 88-run defeat against arch-rivals India. They showed some fight against Australia, but Beth Mooney’s brilliant century, combined with a disciplined bowling performance, handed Pakistan another loss.

Pakistan came close to securing their first-ever ODI victory over England, but persistent rain prevented the outcome. The weather continued to impact their campaign, with the key fixture against New Zealand being abandoned without a single ball being bowled.

The team then suffered a heavy 150-run defeat to South Africa, and their final game against Sri Lanka was also washed out, bringing a disappointing conclusion to their World Cup run.

As part of a compromise arrangement, Sri Lanka was selected alongside India to host Pakistan’s matches at a neutral venue. India and Pakistan face each other only in international tournaments and on neutral ground.
