PCB, Pakistan, Mohsin Naqvi turns down another BCCI proposal demanding for the Asia Cup Trophy

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said that it will announce its decision regarding participation in the T20 World Cup 2026 on Friday. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Monday, January 26, to brief him on recent developments related to the World Cup.

Bangladesh were replaced by Scotland for the T20 World Cup. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had refused to send the team to India, citing security threats. However, an independent review found that security risks at all venues in India were minimal, leading the governing body to stick with its decision.

Pakistan Review World Cup Participation After Backing Bangladesh

Pakistan were the only ICC member nation to back Bangladesh’s concerns over the World Cup decision and also considered reviewing their own participation. There were reports that the Pakistan government might not allow the PCB to send the national team to the tournament.

Notably, the Salman Ali Agha-led side are scheduled to play all their matches in Sri Lanka under a pre-agreed plan with the ICC and the BCCI. Discussions have ranged from a full boycott to limited protest options, including the possibility of not playing the match against India.

Pakistan have already named their World Cup squad, but officials have stated that squad selection does not confirm participation. A final call could still depend on a political decision.

Had a Productive Meeting with the Prime Minister - PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi

Mohsin Naqvi softened his earlier stance after meeting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday. Naqvi had previously said that every option was open, but his comments after the meeting suggested a shift toward resolving the issue rather than escalating it.

Naqvi said he was advised to work toward a solution while still keeping all options available. He added that the final decision would be made either on Friday or next Monday.

"Had a productive meeting with the Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz (Shahbaz) Sharif. Briefed him on the ICC matter, and he directed that we resolve it while keeping all options on the table. It was agreed that the final decision will be taken either on Friday or next Monday," the PCB chief said in a social media post.

However, a report in Cricbuzz suggests that Pakistan will neither boycott the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 nor the match against India because of the fear of ICC sanctions.

PCB Cheif Mohsin Naqvi Trolled After Goof-Up In Pakistan PM’s Name

Mohsin Naqvi faced online trolling after a mistake in a social media post following his meeting with the Prime Minister. In the post, Naqvi said that he had met Nawaz Sharif instead of Shehbaz Sharif, who is currently in office.

Nawaz Sharif last served as Pakistan’s Prime Minister from June 2013 to July 2017, while Shehbaz Sharif is the current Prime Minister. The error quickly went viral and drew widespread attention.

Pakistan are expected to follow the T20 World Cup schedule. Earlier reports had suggested the team might boycott the India match on February 15, but Pakistan have little room to change plans.

Breaking the participation agreement with the International Cricket Council could bring serious consequences, including suspension from international and regional tournaments and the withdrawal of no-objection certificates for overseas players in the Pakistan Super League.
