Papua New Guinea cricketer jailed for robbery

The cricketer had confessed to having attacked a woman and stolen her mobile phone during the tour. The incident occurred back on the 25th of August at around midnight on Hilary Street in St. Helier. He did this as he was returning to his hotel late at night, and the woman was then rescued by the police.

She then revealed someone had punched her to the ground and taken her mobile phone. Doriga was then quickly taken into custody and questioned by the concerned authorities.

After this, the following day, he was formally charged with robbery and appeared in Jersey's Magistrate Court, where he pleaded guilty to the offence back on August 27. After the court proceedings ended, the Royal Court of Jersey denied his bail plea and handed him a sentence of 3 years in prison.

Jersey Detective Sergeant praises the rapid investigation of the visiting cricketer

Detective Sergeant Jim McGranahan of the States of Jersey Police Criminal Investigations Department praised the rapid investigation, saying, "This was a fast-paced investigation with an unknown suspect who had only been on the island a matter of days. Due to the nature of the allegation, which was a stranger assault on a lone female at night, the Police dedicated a number of detectives and other assets who quickly identified Doriga, arrested him and recovered stolen property."

He added, "We will continue to combat violence against women and girls and prioritize the safety of islanders."

Before being accused of such charges, the cricketer had already played matches against Denmark and Kuwait, with further matches scheduled for this week. But Papua New Guinea would now have to play without Doriga and bring in a new man.

Doriga looked in decent form recently

The 30-year-old Papua New Guinea cricketer has played 97 matches for the team and was part of their national side that made it through to the 2021 and 2024 T20 World Cups. However, they could not advance to the main stages of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. In the CWC Challenge Cup, he made a convincing 68 against Denmark but then came back with just 12 against Kuwait.

The player has played in 53 List A matches and 43 T20s, scoring 998 and 359 runs, respectively. He also has 4 half-centuries to his name in ODI cricket and six overall in his career. He has several wicket-keeping records to his name, including the second-most dismissals and most catches in an innings in T20 cricket.
