Zaheer Khan, one of the greatest fast bowlers of his era and a cricket expert, was left awestruck by the extraordinary batting performance of Punjab Kings (PBKS) all-rounder Ashutosh Sharma against Mumbai Indians (MI) in match number 33 of the ongoing IPL 2024 on April 18.

The right-hander has almost taken his team, the Punjab Kings (PBKS), to victory single-handedly against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.

Ashutosh's incredible knock of 61 runs off just 28 balls rescued Punjab from a precarious position of 111 for 7 and gave them a strong chance of securing a memorable win.

Ashutosh's display of power-hitting was remarkable against the Mumbai Indians (MI), as he hammered a total of seven sixes and two boundaries during his entertaining innings in Mullanpur.

However, a standout moment from Ashutosh's innings was when the Punjab Kings (PBKS) batter swept a yorker off Jasprit Bumrah for a massive six, leaving the crowd and commentators in awe of his daring.

However, despite Ashutosh's valiant efforts, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) ultimately fell short of 9 runs while chasing 193 runs for victory in Mullanpur, handing the Mumbai Indians (MI) their third win of the IPL 2024 season.

Meanwhile, Zaheer Khan praised Ashutosh for his focused mindset and exceptional execution, especially in anticipating Bumrah's delivery and executing the sweep shot perfectly.

Zaheer Khan was quoted as saying by India Today: “But tonight looked like Ashutosh was in the zone and that shot, which he played off Bumrah. No one, I mean, no one we've seen can play that kind of sweep shot to Bumrah, anticipating that yorker, going ahead and then yet managing.”

The former Indian pacer also lauded Shashank Singh for his impressive batting performance, scoring 41 runs off 25 balls against the Mumbai Indians (MI). Shashank's innings studded with 2 fours and 3 sixes, which was significant as he entered the crease with the Punjab Kings (PBKS) struggling at 14/4.

Zaheer Khan hails Shashank Singh's patience

He displayed patience and tactical play to steer his team PBKS out of a precarious situation against Mumbai. Zaheer expressed admiration for both Ashutosh and Shashank, saying their remarkable efforts were just unbelievable before the Mumbai Indians (MI) denied them the right the right to take Punjab over the line.

Notably, Shashank has so far amassed 187 runs at an impressive average of 62.33 and a strike rate of 179.81 in his 7 appearances, while Ashutosh has 156 runs to his name in 4 matches, striking at 205.26.

Zaheer signed off by saying, “Well, I mean four down. Who would have given them any chance of getting back in this game? But these two guys, it's just unbelievable stuff. And they've already secured those two points for Punjab. Earlier, when both of these guys batted together. Shashank, obviously that time was a hero.”

Notably, Punjab will next take on Gujarat Titans (GT) in the ongoing IPL 2024 on Sunday, April 21 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.
