The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that the 12th edition of the Pakistan Super League will be played from March 18 to May 2, 2027. The window was finalized after consultations with owners and representatives of all eight teams at the PSL Governing Council meeting in London on September 1.
The eight-team format will return for a second successive season after the 2026 edition expanded the league and introduced a player auction. Peshawar Zalmi will enter the new season as defending champions after beating debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen by five wickets in the final at Gaddafi Stadium on May 3.
PCB Confirms HBL PSL 12 Window
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said the 2026 season had raised expectations around the tournament after producing record crowds and broadcasts. The 2027 PSL will feature the same eight franchises, with the board aiming to build on the success of the previous edition.
“HBL PSL 11 showed the world what this league is capable of – thrilling moments that had the whole nation transfixed, record crowds, record broadcasts. HBL PSL 12 will raise the bar further,” Naqvi said.
“We are committed to delivering another outstanding season and look forward to seeing all eight franchises compete once again for the title,” he added.
The 2026 season marked several changes for the league. Eight teams competed for the first time after Hyderabad Kingsmen and Rawalpindiz were added, while the player auction replaced the draft system. The final at Gaddafi Stadium also attracted a record crowd of 32,461.
PSL 12 Squad-Building Process To Follow
The next stage of preparations will include direct signings, player retentions, the trade window and the player auction. Notably, the eight franchises are allowed to retain up to seven players from their 2026 squads under the two-year contract cycle introduced with the auction system.
Players retained or bought during the inaugural auction were placed on contracts covering the 11th and 12th editions. Franchises must build squads of 16 to 20 players, including at least two uncapped Under-23 players, with one Under-23 player required in the playing XI for every match.
The retention process will be followed by the trade window and player auction as franchises reshape their squads for the 2027 PSL season.
PSL chief executive Salman Naseer said the announcement was only the start of the preparations for the next edition.
“Last season changed what people expect from this league and we intend to meet every one of those expectations in 2027. Today’s announcement is only the first step,” Naseer said.
“Direct signings, retentions, the trade window and the auction will each bring their own excitement in the months ahead,” he added.
Overseas Player Availability Could Pose Challenge
The eight franchises — Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Multan Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi, Quetta Gladiators, Hyderabad Kingsmen and Rawalpindiz — will compete for the title.
The March-May window could create challenges for franchises because of overlapping international commitments and the Indian Premier League (IPL). Overseas players will require availability from their home boards, while teams must also manage their foreign-player slots during the tournament.
Each franchise can make one direct overseas signing outside the regular auction, provided the player did not feature in the previous PSL season. Teams can have five to seven overseas players in their full squad, while between three and four foreign players can feature in the playing XI.
Mohammad Amir’s recent British citizenship could also create a selection challenge for Rawalpindiz. The veteran fast bowler is expected to be registered as an overseas player for the 2027 season, which could affect the franchise’s foreign-player combination.
