PM Narendra Modi to get involved? Pakistan govt prepares to counterattack Jay Shah-led ICC’s threats

The government of Pakistan made it clear that the national cricket team will participate in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, starting on February 7. But the team will not play against their arch-rivals India on February 15 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The decision was announced by the government through its official social media channels, maintaining suspense as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is yet to communicate with the International Cricket Council (ICC) ahead of the T20 World Cup regarding this.
The current situation is like this: The Pakistan government has decided to boycott the India vs Pakistan match, which is a political body, not the cricket governing body of the nation. To make the decision official, the PCB, which is Pakistan’s highest cricket governing body, needs to clear the matter with the ICC. As the PCB has yet to make any communication with the council, suspense remains.
Pakistan can face a mountain of troubles
It is widely believed that Pakistan can put itself into serious trouble if it remains firm on its stance. On February 2, media reports widely claimed that the ICC urged the PCB to reconsider their thinking about their decision to skip the highly anticipated matches against India on February 15. So far, among all the T20 World Cup 2026 matches, the clash between these two nations is expected to be the highest revenue-generating match in the tournament.
To remain in line with the government’s decision, officials of the PCB, as well as the government, have been closely observing the rules and laws. A boycott of the match can simply drag the cricket team into a series of hard bumps, including loss of revenue and damage to Pakistan’s reputation.
Pakistan to use India as an example!
As a safeguard, Pakistani government officials are keeping themselves ready to face and counter the ICC in the court, if needed. It was also reported that Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also met former PCB chief Najam Sethi before meeting Naqvi in Lahore on Sunday to discuss the matter. To counter the ICC in the future, Pakistan can use the BCCI’s stance as an example.
“Since it’s a government decision and conveyed through an official platform, there is no need to write to the ICC,” a source claimed to telecomasia.net.
“Did India at any point convey to the ICC that they would not travel to Pakistan? And when it was once demanded of India to show the government's letter, they never produced it. So, is there a need to give anything in writing? No,” the PCB source made their vision clear.
Sri Lanka to arrange India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2026 match
But it is worth noting that for the India vs Pakistan match and for the T20 World Cup 2026, Pakistan will not travel to India; Sri Lanka will host their matches. Between India and Pakistan, Sri Lanka will be acting as a neutral venue.
Though the PCB source upholds India as an example, there is a huge difference between these two situations: India refused to travel to Pakistan, but Pakistan is refusing to travel to a neutral venue. The PCB source made it clear that the Pakistan Cricket Board will not develop any ICC appeal to avoid the boycott since the decision has been taken at the government level.
