Team India fast bowler Prasidh Krishna has described ODIs as the toughest format in modern cricket, highlighting the challenge of adapting to the powerplay, middle overs and death overs. He believes the increasing number of high-scoring games has made the role of fast bowlers even more demanding.
Krishna made the comments ahead of India’s three-match ODI series against the West Indies, beginning on September 27. Notably, the series will be an important part of India’s preparations for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa, where conditions could offer fast bowlers greater assistance.
Prasidh Krishna Explains Why ODIs Are the Toughest Format
Prasidh Krishna believes the 50-over format places a unique tactical demand on bowlers because they must adjust their plans across different phases of an innings. He also stated that 300-plus totals have increased the pressure on bowlers to find ways to control the scoring rate.
"The ODI format is very interesting, and I think it's the toughest format because you have to adapt between different phases of the game. For a bowler who has to operate in all three phases, the powerplay has made it even more challenging. But that's the challenge. The harder things get, the fewer people there are who can do it well," said Prasidh Krishna to JioStar.
"That's what I'm looking forward to. One-day cricket is exciting, and a World Cup in South Africa will be particularly exciting for fast bowlers. High-scoring games have become the norm, with 300 and 350 now becoming regular scores. But for us as bowlers, the challenge is to restrict the opposition as much as possible and come up with different tactics to get the job done," he concluded.
Prasidh Krishna Opens Up on His Difficult Rehabilitation Journey
Prasidh Krishna also opened up about his time away from competitive cricket during his injury rehabilitation. He admitted that repeatedly following the same training routine can be difficult, both physically and mentally.
“Being injured and unable to take part in the cricket that’s going on is difficult for anyone. The rehab journey is gruelling because you have to do the same things again and again. That’s where the team and sports science staff become really important. The people around you are also crucial, so surrounding yourself with good people, especially family and friends, is very important," said Prasidh Krishna.
"Beyond that, it comes down to how badly you want things to go the way you want them to. It’s easy to sit back and say, ‘I was injured, I couldn’t do much, and it will take time to come back.’ But you also need that mental resilience to get up and get going. I always tell myself that if I was at a certain level when I got injured, I need to be ten times better when I come back. That mindset is really important,” he added.
India Seek Strong Start Against West Indies Ahead of 2027 World Cup
India will enter the ODI series looking for greater consistency after losing two of their three bilateral ODI series in 2026. The West Indies are also searching for a turnaround, having lost their last four bilateral ODI series.
India have not lost a home ODI series against the West Indies since 2002. The visitors won the seventh match of that seven-game series by 135 runs, with Marlon Samuels scoring a century to seal the series.
Notably, the two teams last played an ODI series in India in 2022, when the hosts completed a 3-0 clean sweep. Their most recent meeting in India came in the 2025 Test series, which India won 2-0.
After the three ODIs, India and the West Indies will play a five-match T20I series from October 6 to 17. India will then travel to New Zealand for an all-format tour featuring five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests.
