Shubman Gill steers India to win

In their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener against Bangladesh, Team India delivered a great performance. Bowling first, they bowled out Bangladesh for 228 runs in 49.4 overs. India would have restricted the Bangla Tigers for even less score had Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali not played brilliant innings.

While chasing the target, the No.1 ranked ODI batter Shubman Gill and skipper Rohit Sharma took India off to a flying start, with the latter playing aggressive cricket.

Together, they added 69 runs before the dismissal of Rohit Sharma in the 10th over. After losing his skipper, Gill didn't lose his focus and he continued batting well to complete his fifty off 69 balls.

India were in trouble at a point in time as Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Axar Patel got out in quick succession. Despite wickets falling around him, Gill looked calm and composed.

He built a brilliant partnership with KL Rahul and attacked the Bangladesh bowlers from time to time to make sure that the moment stayed on India's side.

Meanwhile, Gill completed his ton off 125 balls, with 9 fours and 2 sixes, and finished with an unbeaten innings of 101 runs off 129 balls.

Gill steered India to a brilliant 6-wicket win and became the fastest Indian batter to complete 8 ODI centuries. He reached the milestone in 51 innings, surpassing Shikhar Dhawan, who had achieved the feat in 57 innings.

What Happened in the first ICC Champions Trophy clash between India and Bangladesh?

Before their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 clash, India and Bangladesh had locked horns only once in this event in 2017 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

It was a one-sided contest where India showed sheer dominance and secured a 9-wicket win in the semi-final. Bangladesh, who were playing their first-ever Champions Trophy semi-final, started cautiously after losing two early wickets.

Tamim Iqbal (70) and Mushfiqur Rahim (61) stabilized the innings with a crucial 123-run partnership but Kedar Jadhav dismissed both of them to bring India back in the game. In the end, the middle-order and lower-order made decent contributions and the Tigers ended up with 264/7 on the board in 50 overs.

For India, Jasprit Bumrah (2/40) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/53) did a great job, and they were well-supported by other bowlers.

Then, the Men In Blue made chasing look like a cakewalk. Rohit Sharma (123* off 129) and Shikhar Dhawan (46 off 34) set the tone with an aggressive opening partnership of 87.

After Dhawan’s dismissal, Virat Kohli (96* off 78) joined Rohit in the middle and the duo dismantled Bangladesh’s bowling unit. Kohli became the fastest to 8000 ODI runs during his innings as India completed the chase in just 40.1 overs, winning by nine wickets.
