India’s young and explosive batsman Prithvi Shaw bagged an unwanted record on his T20 international debut by departing for a golden duck in the opening T20I against Sri Lanka in Colombo. Prithvi Shaw opened with Shikhar Dhawan and came in with high expectations. But the youngster became the second Indian batsman to snap a golden duck on his first T20I appearance after KL Rahul did it in 2016.
The dismissal occurred on the very first ball of the innings as Dushmantha Chameera pitched the ball up and got the ball to swing away. Shaw went for the drive; however, he lacked foot movement. The ball took a thick edge and went to Minod Bhanuka behind the stumps, enabling him to take a simple catch. Sri Lanka’s pace spearhead made a massive breakthrough in the first over itself.
Meanwhile, apart from Prithvi Shaw, the visitors also handed a debut to leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy. Varun Chakravarthy had already earned a call-up to the squad; however, due to fitness and injury issues, could not play before. Nevertheless, he would be eager to make an impact on this occasion.
Prithvi Shaw fell one short of his maiden half-century in the third ODI:
Prithvi Shaw had already been in a rampant form leading up to the ODI series as he was nearly unstoppable in IPL 2021. He began the ODI leg by smashing 43 off 24 deliveries and cracked 49 in the final game before falling. With Shaw failing in the first T20I, the management could give Devdutt Padikkal an opportunity in the second.
