Out-of-favour batter Prithvi Shaw made an impact after moving from Mumbai to Maharashtra, scoring a century in his debut match. The 25-year-old hit a hundred against Chhattisgarh on a challenging pitch during the Buchi Babu Invitational 2025 at Guru Nanak College in Chennai on August 19.

Shaw left Mumbai at the end of last season to join Maharashtra. He was dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad due to discipline and fitness concerns and was not selected for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He was part of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy-winning team, but his performances were underwhelming.

Shaw completed his maiden century for the state side in 122 balls. The right-handed batter reached the milestone with a single in the 45th over.

Shaw celebrated his century with a muted celebration, a quiet acknowledgment to his teammates and a brief embrace with batting partner Siddharth Mhatre. He scored 111 runs off 141 balls, including 15 fours and one six, at a strike rate of 78.72, before being dismissed.

Prithvi Shaw’s Century Gives Confidence Boost After Career Setback

Prithvi Shaw's century could boost his confidence after a difficult phase in his career. The young opener may help him regain the recognition he once enjoyed through consistent performances for Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad, batting at No. 4 for Maharashtra, scored just 1 run from four balls. Gaikwad is also part of the West Zone squad led by Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur for the Duleep Trophy 2025, which is set to begin on Thursday, August 28.

On Day 1, Chhattisgarh were dismissed for 252, with notable contributions from Sanjeet Desai (93) and Avnish Singh Dhaliwal (52).

Prithvi Shaw Hasn’t Played for Team India Since 2021

Prithvi Shaw scored a century on his international debut in 2018. However, he has failed to live up to his early promise and lost his place in Team India as well. The opener has played only five Tests, six ODIs, and one T20 International for India. He last played for the national cricket team in 2021.

Shaw is not anywhere near a national team recall at the moment. In November last year, he had also gone unsold at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction for the first time ever.

Shaw has 4,556 runs in 58 first-class matches at an average of 46.02, including 13 centuries and 18 half-centuries with a highest score of 379. He has 3,399 runs in List-A games at an average of 55.72 and a strike rate of 125.74. Shaw has scored 2,902 runs in T20s at a strike rate of 151.54.
