Former Indian middle-order batsman VVS Laxman heaped praises on Prithvi Shaw, who redeemed himself by scoring heavily in the domestic circuit after a poor run of form. Prithvi Shaw has not played for India since the first Test against Australia last year and faced an axe, owing to his technique. Despite being on a run-scoring spree, VVS Laxman believes that the youngster has to wait for his chance since there are candidates who have performed well.

Prithvi Shaw played an instrumental role in Mumbai’s winning campaign at the Vijay Hazare Trophy this year, amassing 827 runs in eight innings at a jaw-dropping average of 165.40 with four centuries. The 21-year old copped criticism for his technique as Australia’s bowlers exposed it by frequently bowling the ball coming in to dislodge the stumps.

VVS Laxman believes that Prithvi Shaw has fallen behind Shubman Gill, who he believes has done well in international cricket in all his opportunities. The 134-Test veteran underlined that with experienced players like KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, and Rohit Sharma in the squad already, there are more openers than required.

“Prithvi Shaw, at the moment, is behind in the queue because we have Shubman Gill, who has done really well in international cricket, in the opportunity he has got recently. Plus, you have experience openers in the form of KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma, and you can only have probably three or four openers in the squad,” Laxman said as quoted by India Today.

VVS Laxman admired Prithvi Shaw for going back to the drawing board and working on his technique that has yielded results in the form of impressive performances. Laxman believes that the consistency he displayed is sure to land him another opportunity with the national team as he is a match-winner.

“I am sure Prithvi Shaw will get his opportunity. What really impressed me was that he worked on his technique. It is not only about his performances, but there were some issues with his technique and that is something which he has worked on in the Vijay Hazare and he has been consistent. He is a match-winner, and I am sure he will get his opportunity,” he added.
