Prithvi Shaw, the former India U-19 captain, has been excluded from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad for their upcoming 2024-25 match against Tripura. After being dropped from the Mumbai Ranji team for his team's third match of the ongoing tournament, Prithvi Shaw has hit an all-time low in his career.
Prithvi Shaw began this domestic season in India with the Irani Cup after a short stint with Northamptonshire. The right-handed batter scored a half-century in the second innings, where the Mumbai team, led by Ajinkya Rahane, secured the title with a first-innings lead against the Rest of India.
However, his performance in the season opener against Baroda was disappointing. The opener managed only 12 and 7 runs in two innings during a loss. In the recent match against Maharashtra, he was out for just one run in the first innings but added an unbeaten 39 while chasing a target of 74 runs.
MCA Announces a 16-Man Squad for Third Ranji Trophy Match
On October 21, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced a 16-man squad for the upcoming match after the team’s impressive nine-wicket win over Maharashtra. All-rounder Tanush Kotian was not included in the squad as he has been selected for the India A team that is heading to Australia.
"The Senior Selection Committee of Mumbai Cricket Association consisting of Mr. Sanjay Patil (Chairman), Mr. Ravi Thaker, Mr. Jeetendra Thackeray, Mr. Kiran Powar and Mr. Vikrant Yeligeti has selected the following players to represent Mumbai in Ranji Trophy match against Tripura to be played from 26th to 29th October 2024 at MBB Stadium, Agartala," the statement by MCA read.
Reason Behind Prithvi Shaw's Exclusion From Ranji Trophy Squad
The Mumbai Cricket Association didn't provide any reason for Prithvi Shaw's absence from the Ranji Trophy squad. This decision is viewed as a warning to the 24-year-old opener, who has a history of disciplinary issues. According to reports, the team management is unhappy with his fitness and attitude.
The selection committee, led by chairman Sanjay Patil, decided to drop him for at least one match. According to a report in Cricbuzz, the selectors and team management want to teach him a lesson by excluding him from the Ranji Trophy squad. The batter also doesn't take practice sessions seriously.
Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur, and captain Ajinkya Rahane are consistent with their practice. In contrast, Prithvi Shaw has been skipping sessions even after poor performances. The decision to exclude Shaw from the squad was a decision from the selectors, team management, and the captain and coach.
