Mumbai batter Prithvi Shaw was on the verge of joining the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for IPL 2025, but the deal fell through at the final stage. According to a report by CricBlogger, LSG head coach Justin Langer had initially agreed to sign the Mumbai batter but changed his decision at the last minute.
Prithvi Shaw, who set his base price at ₹75 lakh, went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction. The right-handed batter last played his IPL match for Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2024. Shaw scored 198 runs in eight matches at a disappointing average of 24.75 and a strike rate of 163.63, including one half-century.
Justin Langer Denied Prithvi Shaw IPL Deal With LSG
Prithvi Shaw was available at a steal price of ₹30 lakh, but the franchise spent ₹4 crore on Ayush Badoni. This decision surprised many fans and experts, sparking debate in cricket circles. According to CricBlogger, Justin Langer canceled the deal of securing the young Indian opener.
"Mumbai batter Prithvi Shaw was nearly picked up by the Lucknow Super Giants, but head coach Justin Langer had a last-minute change of heart which saw the deal fall through," sources told CricBlogger.
Shaw has played 79 IPL matches since his debut in 2018. He has amassed 1,892 runs at an average of 23.94 with a strike rate of 147.46, including 14 half-centuries. The opening batter was part of Delhi Capitals from 2018 to 2024. However, he was released by the Delhi team ahead of the 2025 season.
When Was Prithvi Shaw Last Seen Playing Competitive Cricket?
Prithvi Shaw was last seen playing competitive cricket in December during the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Mumbai. He scored 197 runs at an average of 21.88 and a strike rate of 156.34, with a highest score of 49.
Shaw has represented India in five Tests, six ODIs, and one T20I in international cricket. He scored 339 runs from nine innings in Tests at an average of 42.37, with one century and two half-centuries.
The opening batter has scored 189 runs in ODIs at an average of 31.50 with a strike rate of 113.85. However, he has been out of the national team for several years, with his last Tests in 2020 and limited-overs formats in 2021.
LSG and Justin Langer Are Set to Part Ways After Disappointing IPL 2025 Season
LSG acquired Rishabh Pant for a record-breaking INR 27 crore in the 2024 mega auction. However, Pant’s performance in the 2025 season fell short of expectations, scoring only 269 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 133.16. His form was a key reason behind their elimination from the season.
After making the playoffs in their first two IPL seasons (2022 and 2023), LSG missed qualification in the subsequent seasons. They overhauled the squad during the 2025 auction. The team started by winning four of their first six matches but failed to replicate success in the remaining games.
Justin Langer was believed to be recommended by current Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir. Reports added that Langer and the franchise will part ways following the underwhelming season.
