Former team India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener Murali Vijay reckoned Priyansh Arya as the most likely next big thing in Indian cricket. Talking on Star Sports, Vijay explained why the Punjab Kings (PBKS) opener is going to be a must-watch talent in the upcoming Indian Premier League season.
Priyansh Arya was one of the talents who took the IPL 2025 by storm. He played a pivotal role behind the Punjab Kings' promising run in the previous season. With the 24-year-old exciting batter on top, the team managed to confirm a place in the final to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Priyansh Arya announced his arrival with a blistering century in IPL 2025
In his debut IPL season, Arya scored 475 runs at a strike rate of almost 180 in 17 matches. Including a blistering 42-ball 103 against the Chennai Super Kings. His overall T20 stats are also pretty encouraging to read. In a brief domestic T20 career, his batting average is around 30 after playing 46 T20 matches at a strike rate of 169.10. Though the top order batter has only a couple of first-class outings and 16 List-A matches.
Murali Vijay has a strong belief that the Arya has all the skills to become an all-format cricketer for Team India in the future. Vijay praised the batter's method for making strokes, keeping the basics right. Against the spinners, when some batters struggled to score runs, Arya looked confident.
Murali Vijay explained why Arya can be an all-format batter for Team India
"Priyansh Arya seems to be a very interesting personality with a brilliant sense of timing. He has all the ingredients to become a great player. The ability to strike against spinners between overs 7 to 15 is very important. It's the toughest phase to tackle in T20s, but Priyansh Arya does that well as a left-hander with the ability to access all areas. I believe he will play at several levels and can become an all-format player," Vijay told Star Sports.
"His basics are so strong, and his balance is impeccable, which is why he can access both sides of the wicket. It helps him direct the good deliveries from bowlers to different parts of the ground. As he plays more matches, his flair and strengths will come out even more. It is important not to be harsh on such players," he further added.
Arya is taking lessons from Yuvraj Singh
It is worth mentioning that, like Abhishek Sharma, the PBKS batter Priyansh Arya is also among the students of the former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh. Prabhsimran Singh, another PBKS top-order batter, is also under the guidance of Yuvraj.
After Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, Team India has no all-format opener in any of their squads. Abhishek Sharma is the only player in the T20I, and Rohit Sharma in the ODI, are the only batters who have fixed batting positions, which are the opening slots.
