Priyansh Arya, on Tuesday (April 8), truly announced his arrival in the Indian Premier League with a sensational century for Punjab Kings against Chennai Super Kings.
The youngster smashed the fastest IPL century by an Indian since 2010 and the second-fastest IPL century of all time by an Indian.
Arya demolished CSK
What makes his knock even more impressive is the situation under which it came. Batting first, PBKS were in all sorts of trouble after being reduced to 83/5.
The likes of Prabhsimran Singh, Shreyas Iyer, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis failed to deliver with the bat. PBKS were staring down the barrel and looking destined to post a subpar total before Priyansh Arya decided to take matters into his own hands.
The young batsman from Delhi launched a stunning counterattack on CSK and scored a sensational century. He completed his century off just 39 balls before getting dismissed for 103 runs. His knock was studded with 9 fours and 7 sixes. Thanks to his knock and a fine fifty from Shashank Singh, PBKS recovered from 83/5 to post 219/6.
Navjot Singh Sidhu praises Priyansh Arya:
After Priyansh Arya took the CSK bowlers to the cleaners, former India batsman Navjot Singh took to his social media account to share a video, where he lavished praise on the youngster. The former cricketer-turned-commentator also urged BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar to keep an eye on the young opener.
Sidhu went on to compare Priyansh with some of India's greatest batsmen, such as Sachin Tendulkar. Mohammad Azharuddin and Gundappa Vishwanath. He also backed Priyansh to play for India soon.
"Priyansh Arya, mark my words, he will play for India, and he will play for a long time. After Sachin Tendulkar, he is the second batter who is a miracle. Why am I saying this? Look at the circumstances under which he scored that 42-ball century, and what sort of bowlers he was up against, and he scored at around a strike rate of 250," said Sidhu.
"Where Shreyas Iyer, Nehal Wadhera, Prabhsimran Singh were all dismissed...he has wrists like Azharuddin and Gundappa Vishwanath. He scored a six over point and cover and then used the same wrists to hit the ball over the mid-wicket fence.
Even Pathirana and Ashwin were not saved
He scored all around the park. And which bowlers was he up against? Pathirana, Jadeja, Ashwin, who has over 500 Test wickets, and Noor. Not only did he face these bowlers, but he also helped Punjab win, and that was stunning," he added.
Meanwhile, PBKS won the game against CSK by 18 runs to return to winning ways. CSK finished their innings on 201/5 to suffer their fourth defeat in a row.
