Chennai Super Kings (CSK) rejected all the suggestions made by their scouting team ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, including opener Priyansh Arya. According to a report by The Indian Express, the scouting team identified several young, promising talents, but the franchise showed no interest in signing them.

CSK’s disappointing run in the IPL 2025 season has sparked criticism. The team registered unwanted records, including their first-ever loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Chepauk since 2008 and five consecutive home defeats. They became the first team to be eliminated from the IPL 2025 playoffs race.

Priyansh Arya Among Several Young Talents Overlooked by CSK

The Super Kings failed to make the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. This has raised serious concerns about their strategy, especially with Stephen Fleming’s preference for experience and a conservative batting style. Fleming stated that they didn’t manage to get their selections right at the auction.

According to The Indian Express, the management ignored multiple recommendations from their own scouting team. Promising youngsters identified by the scouts, including Priyansh Arya, were not even discussed at the auction table. Other franchises are actively scouting talent from domestic T20 leagues.

In the past, the Super Kings missed out on players like Varun Chakaravarthy and Sai Sudharsan, who have gone on to succeed with other teams. The team has also failed to look beyond MS Dhoni, who took over the captaincy after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury.

Priyansh Arya Gained Attention After Hitting Six Sixes in an Over in DPL 2024

Priyansh Arya came into the limelight after hitting six sixes in an over during a 2024 Delhi Premier League T20 match. The left-handed batter has impressed in IPL 2025 by providing explosive starts for Punjab Kings (PBKS).

Arya scored 47 runs off 23 balls during his debut for Punjab Kings against Gujarat Titans (GT). He has amassed 346 runs in just 10 matches at an extraordinary strike rate of 196.59. He also achieved the third-fastest IPL century by an Indian this season.

The southpaw smashed 103 runs off 42 balls against the Super Kings earlier in the tournament. Punjab, led by Shreyas Iyer, secured victory during the match at Mullanpur.

CSK's Struggles Raise Concerns Over Player Strategy

CSK's struggles this season have raised concerns about their player retention and auction strategy.

The Chennai-based team considered alternatives for MS Dhoni, with Rishabh Pant on their radar. However, with Ruturaj Gaikwad already in the squad and Pant sought after by other teams, CSK opted to retain Jadeja (₹18 crore), despite his retirement from T20Is months earlier.

Shivam Dube’s retention for ₹12 crore also raised eyebrows. They bought players like Ashwin (₹9.75 crore) and Noor Ahmad (₹10 crore), missing out on players like KL Rahul, Liam Livingstone, and Glenn Maxwell.

They were outbid for top batsmen and picked players like Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, and Vijay Shankar, rather than the specialists they had hoped for.
