The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise owners are considering different windows for the 2027 season. Broadcasters have proposed a January start to attract a larger television audience, while the franchises prefer an April-May window to improve player availability.
The PSL expanded to eight teams in the 11th edition, with Peshawar Zalmi beating Hyderabad Kingsmen by five wickets in the final at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The PCB has previously pushed for the league to move to an April-May window on a permanent basis, despite a schedule clash with the IPL.
Broadcaster Favours January Window for PSL 2027
According to Pakistani cricket journalist Saleem Khaliq, the PCB, official broadcasters, and franchise owners remain engaged in active discussions regarding the calendar slot for PSL 2027. The discussions also evaluated staging an exhibition tournament alongside the primary league schedule.
“The broadcaster has proposed starting the next edition of PSL in January, while the franchise owners want an April window. The possibility of holding an event similar to the Hong Kong Sixes was also discussed further at the meeting, but no decision has been taken yet,” Khaliq wrote on X.
A February-March window would bring the PSL back closer to its traditional schedule but could create clashes with other leagues and Ramadan. An April-May window would give franchises access to more international players, although it would overlap with the IPL.
PCB Tells PSL Defaulters to Clear Outstanding Dues
Financial issues also featured in the discussions, with the PCB asking franchises with outstanding payments to clear their dues. Some franchise owners reportedly highlighted financial difficulties and said the war had affected their businesses and delayed recoveries.
However, the PCB made it clear that the outstanding amounts must be paid regardless of the reasons. Khaliq wrote:
“PCB officials have made it clear to the PSL defaulters that they will have to pay the full outstanding amount under all circumstances. The defaulters highlighted the financial challenges they are facing and also stated that the war had affected their financial situation and that recoveries had still not been made. They were told in response that, whatever the reasons may be, the outstanding dues must be paid.”
Peshawar Zalmi Win PSL 2026 Title
The Pakistan Super League expanded from six to eight teams during the 2026 season. Peshawar Zalmi won their second PSL title after defeating debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen by five wickets in the final at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Hyderabad were bowled out for 129, while Peshawar chased down the target with Aaron Hardie playing a key role. The Australian all-rounder took 4/27 before scoring an unbeaten 56 off 39 balls.
Babar Azam finished the season as the leading run-scorer with 588 runs at an average of 73.50. His Peshawar teammate Kusal Mendis scored 550 runs at 55.00, while Lahore Qalandars batter Fakhar Zaman scored 401 runs at 57.29.
Peshawar's Sufiyan Muqeem led the bowling charts with 22 wickets at an economy rate of 7.20 and was named Player of the Series. Hyderabad's Mohammad Ali took 20 wickets at 8.36, while Islamabad United's Shadab Khan and Hyderabad Kingsmen's Hunain Shah finished with 17 wickets each.
