IPL 2025 saw a host of good performances and a new champion for the first time since 2016. In this article, we will talk about the performance of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the recently concluded season.
Punjab Kings Squad Rating for IPL 2025: 9.5/10
Once considered the most inconsistent team in the history of IPL, PBKS surprised everyone by making it to their first IPL final after 2014.
As has been the case with Punjab Kings, the team came into the 18th season of the league with yet another new captain at the helm in the form of Shreyas Iyer.
Iyer, who was the captain of the 2024 IPL champions KKR, was picked up by Punjab at the IPL 2025 auction and was certain of becoming the captain of the side for the upcoming season.
Punjab Kings also roped in Ricky Pointing, who has worked as the coach of Delhi Capitals till the previous season and had a nice camaraderie with Shreyas Iyer as the duo guided DC to their first IPL final in 2020.
The pair decided to go with a young Indian batting lineup in the form of Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, Nehal Wadhera, and Shashank Singh, with Shreyas Iyer being the force that held the team together.
The risk of going in with an inexperienced batting lineup paid off as these young batters took the responsibility of taking the team home, led by Prabhsimran Singh at the top of the order.
Prabhsimrah scored more than 450 runs and provided a solid platform for the incoming batters to capitalize on, along with Priyansh Arya, who also played match-winning innings on certain occasions.
One of Priyansh's innings included a hundred in difficult circumstances against CSK as wickets kept falling from one end. But Priyansh did not crutail his attacking strokeplay and scored a match-winning century.
Other than the openers, it was Nehal and Shashank who bailed the team out of trouble in various games to help them post a challenging total on the board.
Highest Run Scorers
Player | Matches | Runs | Strike Rate | 6s |
Shreyas Iyer | 17 | 604 | 175.07 | 39 |
Prabhsimran Singh | 17 | 549 | 160.52 | 30 |
Priyansh Arya | 17 | 475 | 179.24 | 25 |
As far as PBKS' bowling is concerned, it was a collective effort with different bowlers putting their hand up on different instances.
It was Chahal's four-wicket haul against KKR and his hat-trick against CSK that turned the game in Punjab's favour, while it was Arshdeep's economical last over in the last league game against MI that made the difference.
The senior bowlers got good support from Marco Jansen and Vijaykumar Vyshak, both of whom picked up wickets at crucial moments for Punjab Kings.
All in all, it was the stability and clarity of roles in the team that yielded positive results for the Punjab Kings.
